When it passes into common usage and is recognised by dictionaries as a word in its own right. Do you consider fridge, lab and exam to be real words? How about bus, phone, gym and vet?

It was a genuine question. And for me there is a difference between the written and spoken word. It’s also probably an age thing - I’m 72 next month.

Nobody talked about an omnibus when I was a kid 60 years ago, and today I would use admin and lab in speech but not if I was writing something.
