You can get off at either the Stadium of Light or at St Peters. Avoid all pubs in the city centre, East End and Hendon.
I'll post a list of safer pubs nearer the time

Sunderland train station in the city centre is walkable from the stadium (around 15 minutes).

A new 'Metro' train service has started running to Sunderland, with two new stations 'Stadium of Light' and 'St. Peters' both serving the stadium. The metro provides regular and rapid transport from both Newcastle and the South of Sunderland.

Both new stations are only a few minutes walk from the stadium, although away supporters should alight at St Peters Station as that is closer to their entrance. This provides an alternative to the regular rail services.

Note though that after the game the Stadium of Light metro station only operates Northbound (i.e. towards Newcastle) and St Peters metro station only operates Southbound (i.e. towards Sunderland centre).

The nearest airport is Newcastle which is located 24 miles away. However the journey is pretty straightforward as both the Stadium Of Light and Newcastle Airport are both served by the Metro transit system. There are frequent departures to Sunderland and the journey time is just under an hour. Change at South Gosforth Metro Station for a Metro to the Stadium Of Light Station.

Problem is the city centre mainline station does not connect directly (or even regularly) with the East Coast mainline or even Newcastle or Durham!!!
It's principal connection is via a loop with Teesside and via another loop to Newcastle.
Better to get into Newcastle and get either bus or Metro line.
There's also a load of park and ride options
If driving, parking is not too bad at all - but get there early!

Is this not it?

The Metro from Newcastle Central station to the Stadium of Light / St Peters is about 25 minutes direct.

As fatboy's post says, use St Peters before the game, Stadium of Light after the game. Both are about 700 metres from the ground.

Probably if the link worked!!!
:lolol:

But it really is a nightmare into Sunderland by mainline - sort of branch line to nowhere!

Lod B is right ... if you get a straight through Metro you can do it in about 25 mins ... or almost 40 mins for the stopper!!!

I'm on the 11:20 out of Stanstead which gets into Newcastle around 12:25.

I too am coming back onm the 19:10 flight .

total cost is £95 which is highly competitive against the £87 train fare that thier now asking.

Same flight out as me ;) and five others!!!

We're then jumping on the Metro to the Stadium.

We're staying overnight in the Sunderland Travelodge (Newcastle was full and the Travelodge is perferctly located for nightlife) and flying back on Sunday lunchtime. (too tight timewise to try to return after the game for us, but you should be okay if you leave on the final whistle)

Total cost, incl Plane travel, Metro Travel, The Match, Accomodation AND parking at the Airport = £85 per head :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

n.b. Beers out on Saturday night might double that though :drink: :drink: :drink:

I was watching that Airline programme last week and larfing myself silly at all those dim clowns who Easyjet wouldn't allow to fly on a domestic flight because they had no PHOTOGRAPHIC ID. and then realised that I dikdn't know that you HAVE to have acceptabke photo ID to get on an internal flight.

SO DON'T FORGET YOUR PASSPORT WHEN FLYING TO NEWCASTLE:dunce:

Ah well, will be having me Green Day or Sex Pistols on me CD player on full blast!

Will Sunderland let you bring in CD's into the ground? Possible weapons? ???

Stayed at the Newcastle Travelodge for last season's Middlesbrough and Hartlepool fixtures.

As RLZ says, it's perfectly located for the nightlife. And it's very heavily used by hen night parties who have flown over from Belfast. An amusing evening is to be had just sitting in the Travelodge bar watching groups of young women preparing to hit the Quayside ("Am I showing too much leg?" "Nah ... it's those tits I would worry about, if I was you"), regrouping in mid-evening ("Has anyone seen Siobhan?" "I think she's pulled") and finally getting back late for a pot of tea ("Holy Mother of God, Siobhan, where did you get to?" "Don't tell my Patrick, but it was like this ....").

Marvellous scenes.
