Was in Turkey on holiday this time 20 years ago, went to the south east corner and back-packed around the area between Marmaris, Fethiye and Bodrum...including Olu Deniz beach, where I was spat at by a German woman who walked across the wicket whilst I was bowling in an impromptu game of cricket. We stayed in Fethiye which was one massive building site, the town was being rebuilt following an earthquake...suspect the whole place would look totally different now. I loved everything about Turkey, the people were friendly and welcoming, food was good and scenery and beaches spectacular at their best...would happily recommend the country to others. Have also been to Cyprus, can't remember as much about that even though it was more recent...went for a hockey tour and spent most of the time either playing, getting drunk or recovering from both by the pool.

brighton, actually
Crete was nice byt V V HOT in July, when I went a few years ago- October should be a bit cooler, though their tourist season doesnt last as long- best head for one of the larger resorts, to avoid being left in middle of nowhere, with b@ggerall to do!

My compass skills are lacking, well it was late when I posted, the Bodrum area is of course in south western Turkey.

I went there about 20 years ago. The place was rather pleasant and the locals very friendly. However tourism in Turkey was comparatively new at the time so I wouldn't like to say what it's like now. Mind you Algie goes there quite often and he likes it.

It's all a matter of opinion I guess!

I used to love Cyprus, and Paphos/Coral Bay area, but now far too tacky IMO. You could be on any of the Costas. Good beach in Coral Bay though, poor in Paphos. Weather in October would be fine.

I'd go for Western Crete (XL fly to Hania from Gatwick.) It's beauutiful, great beaches and not too many Brits - bit like Cyprus was 20 years ago.

I haven't been to Cyprus for 25 years. My daughter went a few years ago and was shocked by how much had changed. I'd rather remember how it used to be.
Greece is lovely but Tom Hark is right, the smaller islands shut up shop in October. Glyfada (coastal area near Athens) is nice and you can pop along to Piraeus if you want to take a trip to some of the islands either for a day or a couple of nights. I can recommned the Emmantina hotel there.
