I have not stayed in Cancun but did go to Escaret while I was on a cruise which is very near cancun mate. It is an ecological park and I would recommend it highly, They have a zoo and you can do the usual swimming with dolphins etc. They also have some caves you can swim through which is really good and have displays for Mayan games and rituals. Enjoy mate :)

Yes. I can't really help you though, since I only spent a day or two there. It's nothing more than an American playground full of overpriced plastic hotels. There are some very interesting parts of the Yucatan peninsula though.

Xcaret? Watch out for the iguanas while your eating! Use bio sun cream though.

Cancun airport was a right pain to go through when arriving direct. If you fly from the US it's a lot easier.

What he said

spent 4 months in Yucatan/Belize/Guatemala/Honduras.

Theres a fairly nice island off Cancun called Isla Mujares (sp) which is worth a look. Though if you're going all that way I'd go down the coast to Tulum

Depends what you are after really

dont really want to stay in cancun too much.
got package holiday for 2 weeks, but plan to travel to see the real mexico, and see some of the better sites that arent hotels

think already booked to go on the ecological park and swim and feed dolphins, never done a package holiday before, and it seems a waste to stay on the resort for 2 weeks

2 weeks and you're off to find the real Mexico.

It'll take you around 2 weeks to get there, Cancun's miles from anywhere. Although the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza are well worth the day trip from Cancun, all the hotels will offer it.

If you're after a spot of snorkelling or diving, try a trip to Cozumel.

The seawater in Cozumel is the clearest I have ever seen and so beautiful.

Chichen Itza is rather snazzy, however did you find it ruined by overcrowding and people selling crap everywhere.
Really should take tips from Peru and Machu Picchu and have a daily cap on the number of people allowed in.

Agree wholeheartedly about Chichen Itza, Xcaret and the Mayan ruins at places like Tulum.

Unless it's changed dramatically in the past ten years - quite possible - I don't see how anyone can call Cancun a "shithole" though. True, it's more like the USA than Mexico, but it's one of the cleanest resorts I've ever been to and the only one where it's absolutely safe to walk the streets at any time of the day or night.

Tulum and Chichen Itza are the only redeaming features. All hotel based entertainment apart from Coco Bongos night club and a few bars. Beach pretty with big breakers. Could be anywhere though. Rainy season from May to October

the R1 bus is only 35 pence anywhere and the drivers are craaazy !

All fair comments above, Cancun is expensive, in the middle of nowhere an as Mexican as the Queen of Englands tits, On yer way Chichan Itza stop off at Valladolid, its quite a big town and is about as Mexican as you can get in that region. PS if you see any Old Bill in Cancun, keep out the way
