There's a big market there once a week with very cheap jewelry and t-shirts whose colours fade almost while you wear them - not really my thing of course, although the silver there is very cheap - the Tibetans give the best deals but won't be haggled down half as much as the locals. As for the rest of the town, it's a gorgeous spot and fairly quiet, as I recall, but I think they have some of the old rave stuff occuring there from time to time.

Avoid like the plague anyone trying to clean your ears. Seriously, there's people who really hassle you with this.
Avoid the stalls as you enter Anjuna - go for the ones in the middle or by the beach.
Walk away if you feel pressured, it's the best way to get a really good price on something. I got a silk throw for my bed for 600R when the opening gambit was 3500R
Oh, and that reminds me. Have a look around first. Get clear in your mind how much you're willing to spend and then put that amount of money in your pocket and hide the rest elsewhere. That way you can always claim it's all you've got.
Don't be fooled by the signs in the airport on the way back. The duty-free shop, once you get past Customs is dirt, dirt cheap so no need to stock up on fags and booze until you are just about to get on the plane.
If you get a chance travel south to the less spoiled parts of Goa like Benaulim. It's very pretty.

Pass on that one. I don't know as I stayed in the South and was very much a chill out trip.
Be prepared for interminable bureaucracy. 10 people doing 1 person's work everywhere you go.
Also, Goans aren't exactly the speediest of people. If you eat in one of the restaurants on the beaches away from the main areas it'll take ages to get served BUT it is so, so , so cheap you won't mind!
Have fun. It's a lovely place and the locals are really friendly. Try and get on one of the buses too instead of the usual tuk-tuk. It's quite an experience.

they played heavy house in a lot of the bars in Baga/Candolim but its all great in the circumstances. in Anjuna I bought a red and white sriped Newcastle shirt! anythings possible. you do get harrassed but ive had much worse (its preferable to the low life that walk thru Playa las Americas trying to get you into bars!)
eat in the beach shacks (dont let the fact Lois was in bed for a week and I thought she was dead, put you off) I was perfectly fine. have a great time. We'd go again tommorrow if we wernt goin to Thailand instead!

I was sick as a dog on plane on the way to Goa - from a pie I'd eaten in the Hogshead in Wimbledon the day I left. There, during two weeks of eating incredibly good curries, I suffered NOT ONE drop of a less than solid motion.
Go to the spice plantation which is on the other side of a lake with kingfishers everywhere - they give you an Indiana Jones-style torch made out of twigs and wood when you leave at night.
Also, drink the local cashew feni mixed with lemonade. It's very much like wanking: it'll make you go blind eventually but at least it's cheap.

If you do head south you should check out Palolem. It's not as nice as it was 5 years ago but is still well worth a visit.

Old Goa is the best bit - massive churches hidden away behind palm trees etc etc. And no population anymore due to MALARIA. Get one of the guides to tell you what's what - you might miss dead Jesuits on display otherwise.

I haven't been for more than 12 years, so things may have changed, but back then Chapora, just north of Anjuna, was by far the nicest and laid back of all the coastal villages.
