Rodman stars in Brighton triumph

Chicago Bulls legend Dennis Rodman helped Brighton Bears to a 91-88 victory over Guildford Heat on his British Basketball League debut.
The 44-year-old, who signed for the club in a one-game deal after being evicted from Celebrity Big Brother, scored four points in 26 minutes.

Rodman's appearance ensured a 1,800 sell-out at the Brighton Triangle.

The game was delayed by half an hour as fans queued outside to witness the former NBA star in action.

He had the chance to wrap up the game when he took two free-throws with six seconds left but missed both.

Rodman says he is ready to return to Britain for two more games next month.

"Everyone has been very courteous and I would love to come back and repay that, let's hope it happens," he said.

It was very difficult being in that house, just sitting around talking about this and that and smoking cigars.

Bears coach Nick Nurse said: "Dennis might have looked a bit rusty, but it was a night nobody in British basketball will ever forget.

"He was a delight to have around, the crowd loved him and it would be great if he would come back and play for us again next month which we are talking about."

Rodman, who was paid a reported £20,000 for his appearance, added: "I wasn't here to try and steal the show. I just wanted to have some fun and help these players, who have been working their butts off.

"It's been very difficult to get sleep the last few days, I've been busy and Stringfellows is the business!

"It was very difficult being in that house, just sitting around talking about this and that and smoking cigars. But I enjoyed this and I love Britain."

I think his presence on the court was enough to win the game for Brighton. He showed glimpses of why he was an NBA legend, but you could see he wasn't fully game fit. Would love to see him come back when he's had more than 24hrs to prepare though.

Brighton started off very shaky with Rodman on the bench, and it wasn't long before they were losing by 11pts. Everytime Rodman was on court they seemed to get back into the game. They led at the end of the first half. But then Rodman didn't come out till a few minutes after everyone else, and Brighton found themselves quickly down by 7pts again. Then he comes back on, and they get back into it. Then in the 4th quarter Brighton stretched out a 10pt lead, only to see it cut in the dying minutes.

Whatever anyone says about his performance last night, he certainly played his part in the win

Btw, the game last night seemed to have all the organisation of our youth team game against chelsea. And yet they can't simply say we didn't expect to see such a crowd.

At least they had the sense not to start the game until everybody was in the arena.

NBA went down hill years ago - much prefer to watch college basketball, prima donnas like Rodman who overshadows his talent with a horrendous private (which he likes to make public) life, are a nusiance to professional basketball!!

Andrew Alleyne was not a work permit player last night so the Bears are fine.

Burgess Hill Triangle just got a mention on Sky Sports News.

In The Sunday Times there's a picture and strap line saying The Triangle is in Haywards Heath.

The locals won't take kindly to their posh neighbours trying to muscle in on Burgess Hill's 15 minutes of fame
