I've been teaching myself to play for a while now and I am pleased with my progress. However I wish to become more advanced with finger picking. I have been advised and wait for it.........................................................to have false nails fitted to my right hand. Yes, go to a nail bar or get the missus to fit them. Has nayone else done this and found it succesful, or is it a wind up, I have to say it makes some sense but being a red blooded male it dont seem right.

there really is no need for that. you don't actually NEED any nails for fingerpicking, some of my friends just use the hardened skin on the ends of their fingers. I just grow my nails long on my right hand and keep them longer than the nails on my left hand. It is worth keeping them nice on the right hand to make sure they don't crack, but a cut once in a while is all i do. I can't see why you would ever get fakes. Plus if you got found out - the torment would be unbearable...

That would surely have the same effect as holding a plectrum.

My best ever guitar moment was being able to shift seamlessly between F and C and back again. God bless muscle memory and all those who sail on her.

Yes but I have tried to grow them and keep them healthy but I keep biting the bastards sub conciously, especially this season.

Electric guitar for me....don't need to worry about any of this stuff then...just use a pick. Have a look at utube clips of Milos. Amazing classical guitarist....uses his long fingernails.

Rub sun tan cream on them - it works trust me!!! Brilliant for strengthening nails and they grow quicker too - I don't know why but it works x

Does it taste shit because I need to stop biting them.

nah, grow your real ones (doesn't need to be much) and - here's the effeminate bit - keep them smooth with a nile file so they don't crack & break, making you start again. Plenty of fingerpickers use no nail at all, so don't worry too much - find your own way :guitar:

I just use a thumb pick and my fingers which have hardened up over time although some guitarists use fingerpicks or nails so maybe have a try with all the different styles until you find the most comfortable style that works for you

You can get finger picks (and thumb picks) to push on to your fingers. Don't like 'em myself, but plenty of people do use them
