Spanish footballer Miguel Garcia gave his teammates a terrifying shock after suffering a heart attack during a game at the weekend.

The Salamanca midfielder fell to the ground in the second half during his side's Segunda Division match against Real Betis.

The club's medical staff were forced to revive him on the field before emergency services arrived.

It took doctors five minutes to bring the 31-year-old back to consciousness as his teammates looked on in horror.

Thankfully Garcia is now said to be in a stable condition as further tests are carried out to determine the cause of the heart attack, which is becoming a common occurrence in Spanish football.

Former Sevilla defender Antonio Puerta and Espanyol's Daniel Jarque both suffered fatal heart attacks, while Real Madrid and Spain international Ruben de la Red and Sevilla defender Sergio Sanchez have also suffered the same problems and are yet to return to football.

Luckily for Garcia it was the quick-thinking of the medical staff at the stadium that averted another tragic incident in Spanish football.

Makes you think about your own health if it happens to fit sportsmen.
Hope he makes a full recovery.

Jesus. It can't be easy when you are more than just work mates.

Good news that he is making a recovery.

Strange that heart trouble seems to be more prevalent than it used to. Poor checks? Supplements? Over training?

That's rather shocking.

I take it the game was abandoned, the players couldn't really play on after that.

Five heart attacks in a few seasons is a lot. Is it due to the heat in Spain or other reasons. Am I right in thinking that there have been two in English football - David Longhurst and Clive Clarke?

Unbelievably, they actually finished the game.
Salamanca lost 3-0 (2-0 when the incident occurred).

The physio said he was legally dead for 25 secs too.

Five heart attacks in a few years sounds a bit suspicious to me. Unfortunately every time I hear one of these stories it makes me think of blood doping. The Operation Puerto affair indicated that many spanish footballers had been doping and nothing was done about it. Is this the gruesome consequence of the practice?

Cynical response, but perhaps there is something in that..... why Spain?

That is awful. I hope Miguel Garcia makes a full recovery. The terror he must have felt before he collapsed...

Heart defects are quite easy for clubs to detect in medical checks.

The PFA have been going on for a while about how the clubs should make such checks mandatory. One of the problems however has been that young, outwardly fit players often don't want to know. If you're told at 19 years of age and with your whole career ahead of you that you have a congenital defect that has only a 0.1% chance of being fatal, but that would force you to give up football forever....it's a tough old decision to make.
