Well, probably not 'only' in America, but deep south does seem to have its fair share of weirdos.

Death call for US womb murderer

A US jury has recommended the death penalty for a woman convicted of killing an expectant mother and cutting out her unborn child. The jury, in the state of Missouri, had rejected Lisa Montgomery's plea that she had been delusional when she killed Bobbie Jo Stinnett and stole the baby.

The jury spent five hours deliberating its recommendation. Judge Gary Fenner said he would abide by the decision. Montgomery, 39 was convicted on Monday of killing Bobbie Jo Stinnett in 2004.

The baby, a girl, survived and was later returned to her father.

Montgomery met the Stinnetts at a rat terrier dog show in Kansas in April 2004. Having learned of Bobbie Jo's pregnancy, in December 2004 she used a fake online profile to set up a meeting at the Stinnett family home saying that she wanted to buy a terrier puppy. Once in the house she used a rope to strangle the young mother, before hacking the baby from her womb with a kitchen knife.

Defence lawyer Fred Duchardt had claimed sexual abuse during Montgomery's childhood had led to mental health problem. "I'm not ashamed to ask you all for mercy," Mr Duchardt told the jury, according to the Associated Press (AP). "I ask for it on behalf of Lisa and all the people who love her."

But prosecutors believed Montgomery was faking her mental illness. No sentencing date has yet been set.

The most curious thing..
While agree this is wierd and nasty stuff, you might try looking Missouri up on a map. I live in Tennessee and even we are not 'deep' south!

If you are looking for Tennessee, it's touching 'Missoura' at the bottom right corner.

Alabama Mississippi and Louisiana are all 'deeper' south.

Much of Georgia and all of Florida are widely assumed to have become too civilised for aligning with the hick 'backwoods' ways of the aforementioned states. imo.

Agreed. Tennessee, and Kentcuky to the north, are definitely in 'The South' which is more a cultural than geographical division anyway. However the 'deep south' is usually taken to mean the abovementioned three states, especially the swamps and bayous - you know, 'Deliverance' country. Not to say we don't have our hick people and places here too, we just don't have the swamps and alligators!

I met a few 'Southern folk' even in California - they felt way more foreign than me I'm sure.
You can take the hick out of the south, but you can't take the south out of the hick.

How'd ya like that dang country music down there, git yew around some cowpokes and good ol' boys y'hear? Sho'nuff, darn tootin'.

My main recollection of Tennessee is never having seen so many huge backsides in my life, although Essex is fast catching up. Mind you the scenery outside the towns is prettier in Tennessee.

Sickenly this revolting crime is not unique to the USA, it happens in a whole lot of third world societies (believe me there are more than a few examples of the Third World in the planet's largest nation).

As far as it goes Missouri is geographocally not the South and in fact did not officially join the Condeferacy during the American Civil War although a large percentage of their citizens did align themselves with Jeff Davis' Rebs. Tennessee and Georgia are not geographocally as far south as Louisiana, Alambama, Florida or Texas and Arizona but as they are two of the few US states that have any sort of history they do align themselves with the American South. They are proud of the Confederate Flag even is most of the people there are not rasists.

A proper Confederate Flag is very hard to fine in the US no as like The Cross of ST George it has been adopted by extreme right wing groups, so much so that merely having a Confederate flag tattoo can get you marked as a racist and in fact fired from your job.

One way to annoy somebody from Tennessee or Georgia is to call them a 'Yank' as Yanks are from the Northern States and about as alike to Dixie folk as Scots are to the English.

Pros and cons of living anywhere, imho. Hate country and just ignore it, but most people here are more friendly and helpful than anywhere else I've been in the US (or UK!)
