Liverpool Football Club today received a massive boost when the city council granted planning permission for a new 60,000-seater stadium to be built in Stanley Park, just 300 yards from the present Anfield venue.

The decision was made after much deliberation at the Town Hall just after lunchtime and followed an 8am inspection of the new site by members of the council's planning committee.

The new stadium - set to retain the Anfield name - will not only enable a further 15,000 fans to see the Reds in action every time they play at home but will also kick-start a whole regeneration project in north Liverpool.

A 150-page planning application was submitted by the club in October 2003 and details how Stanley Park will benefit from the construction of the new ground and how the current stadium site will be transformed into a public plaza surrounded by apartments, offices, bars and restaurants and a hotel.

More details and reaction to follow.

Still don't understand why they and Everton don't pool resources and go for a San Siro size stadium for 80-85,000. Surely they would fill it?

Let me get this straight, they are in Liverpool, one of the ugliest cities in the UK, with acres and acres of crappy, derelict land, just begging to be flattened and developed, and someone lets them build a 60,000 seater stadium IN A PARK??

Where are we going wrong here, folks, how about Stanmer Park for us in that case? That wouldn't ruin your precious pond, oh NIMBYs.

On NSC for over two decades...
And I don't expect Liverpool will be asked to repay the massive grants they received during the 80's and 90's to build those huge new stands, which will now be demolished after barely a decade of use.

And it won't get called in for a Public Inquiry I'll wager.

According to BBC report, it's almost certain to be called in by a certain Deputy Prime Minister

If they are going to build on Stanley Park it MUST be for both clubs.

The Park belongs to the people of Liverpool, and is as famous as the Stadiums themselves.

If the will is there to build the stadium on the park - it must be for the people of Liverpool and not just for one group of fans.

Before we draw comparisons this is a completely different situation to ours.

Personally I don't think they should build it there, before of the available brownfield sites in Liverpool.. But if they do see my thread above.

There is a lot of resistance to it in Liverpool I understand.

I have always wondered why wild park was never considered.

"A number of buildings in the Anfield Road area will be demolished and the old stadium site will be turned into a plaza, shops, restaurants, flats, offices and a hotel"

Nice one.

How about:

A number of buildings in the Falmer area will be demolished and the old village site will be turned into a plaza, shops, restaurants, flats, offices and a hotel.
