My gf bought this programme off ebay for a present for someone. Any way some notable stuff from it. The programme is dated saturday, january 28, 1978 and we are about to play Notts County in the fa cup 4th round. The highest gate at home so far has been v saints 32,979 (Wow!) other notable home numbers, 25,199 v Luton, 27,170 v Bolton, 28,208 v Palace, 22,647 v Mansfield. These attendances are huge, i didn't realise we were once this big (and will be again), but it goes to show if we had the numbers back then in the old second division then we could potentially almost fill falmer. The squad list is as follows- steele, tiler, cattlin, williams, horton, rollings, lawrenson, potts, ward, mellor, fell, o'sullivan, piper, ruggiero, towner, winstanley, clark, maybank. Ward is the leading scorer so far with 15 goals. Jimmy Sirrel is the manager of the visitors. Just thought i'd share this

Get rid off it, we lost 2-1.

The game (according to the Albion History book) was actually played on 31 Jan.

The attendance against Saints wasn't even the biggest at the Goldstone that season either.

You are. 90k+ maybe but 36,000 was against Fulham in 1958 and people were thinner then!

The highest I've been in, at the Goldstone, was 34,766 v Rochdale (!) on may 3rd 1972, div 3 ie same level as now.

It sounds like you're mixing up a few games there. Clark did score against Charlton but it was in April in 1978/79 and we won 2-0. That was before a gate of 30,859 - our 19th highest attendance. We won 3-0 at the Valley just before Christmas but Poskett scored all three.

The next time we played Charlton was in 83/84 when we won 7-0 - Clark had long gone by then.

And the record attendance at the Goldstone was 36,747 against Fulham on 27 December 1958 - that was discussed on a thread the other day.

I inherited a selection of mid-late 70s programmes many years ago - black and white photo on the cover of fans with a home made 'BHA - The Dolphins' flag if memory serves, haven't seen them for years as they're in storage.

Was Alan Mullery there?

That was in 1978? Cool, I remember it well: almost certainly the first away game that I went to, aged eight. I remember being able to walk around the Valley at half time to see the goal we'd be attacking, something I don't think it was possible to do any more at the Goldstone by then.

Blast from the past...Jan 28th 1978 was my wedding day. Chucked it down. We had to have the photos taken indoors. Don't remember any snow though as one poster suggested.
We are still happily married ...and its still chucking it down.!

If that is the one that says GO AT EM Brighton or something like that, the fan's name was Peter Deacon. He went to Falmer and unfortunately succummed (sp?)to kidney failure and is no longer with us.

It is funny the stuff you remember as an "older" Brighton fan. Mansfield were a team to beat in our division in the late 70's as I recall. To beat them at Withdean 6-0 many many years later at Withdean was very sweet. For me, following the Albion has always been like that. No instant success. No guarantees. But that nagging knowledge that stick with it long enough and the good times will out.

I think the season we beat Mansfield 6-0 we also lost at home to Rochdale on without a doubt the wettest evening of my life (hmm maybe Swindon in the play offs). A crap result but I it produced many a funny memory.

Sentimental bloke down under signing off....................if you see a man with "Ted" on his back do me a favour and buy him a pint of strongbow!!!

I COULD be wrong (and I haven't got my Carder and Harris on hand to check) but I think that season was the only season in our history where the average home crowd exceeded the proposed Falmer capacity.

I have my Carder and Harris to hand and there were two seasons where the average attendance exceeded Falmer capacity: 1977/78 and 1979/80. 1978/79 came in at just under - 22,074.
