An alternative to penalties after extra time

How about... taking the penalties after 90 minutes, BEFORE extra time is played.

Regardless of who wins the pens, another 30 mins is played. If the game is still tied after 120 mins the winner of the pens wins the match.

The team which wins the pens is rewarded as they can then play for a draw in extra time, but the other team has the chance to make amends by actually winning the match in 120 mins.

Weird, but it works, non?

Might make more of a show of the whole thing. Still, it would only take an incompitent ref to ruin it for everyone.

How about trying what they have in ice-hockey, play extra periods if the score it tied at the end of regulation time, keep going until someone scores and wins the match.

I once watched a Stanley Cup game that went to the third period of over-time after finishing 1-1, for pure edge of the seat entertainment value it was peerless.

Someone suggested a variation of this on Talksport on Friday, but the penalties are taken before the game.

Following a lengthy debate the general consensus was that it was not a good idea, as the player who missed the crucial penalty would not be able to concentrate on the game properly as he had let his team mates down.

Physcologically it would be very hard to play extra without thinking about the vital penalty you have just missed.

Silver goal? Golden goal? To many rule changes recently if you ask me,[the old man said as he limped off into the distance].

How about just doing something so simple as awarding the game for most corners won over the ninety minutes. Surely no finer indicator of who's been going forward and trying to force a result. INNIT?

Why not take the pain out of the lottery that is penalties, and just toss a coin?

Or in international games award it to the team who is ranked lowest.

Same would work in a domestic situation

i like it. so what if the player who missed the pen cannot concentrate, and you have used all your subs.
he better start to concentrate because he has the chance to put right what he may have done wrong. he has to get on with it and stop sulking. i like the idea. much less pressure on pens and england are shite at em.

i like the idea of the ice hockey pens.

run from the half way line with the ball have 25 seconds to shoot you only have one shot tho no rebounds

That'll be the guy who suggested 3pts for a win and abolished salary capping.

Great minds and all that.

I believe they used a similar method to settle draws in the US during the Pele, Moore, Beckenbaer (sp) era. 70/80's ?
