Re the Amazon Fire 8: Dumb ass question maybe but my Czech friend wants to know could she download films from czech torrent site http://ulozto.cz on this and then watch them? She was thinking of getting a cheap laptop or chromebook but obviously this is much cheaper. It's the only thing she wants it for.

Install VLC application which is a great media player. Then transfer the movie files to the Fire tablet. Then watch them using VLC.

Anyway, so far so good. Almost Ipad quality (obviously a bit smaller) watching anything via the browser, with much better sound.

I might get one. I bought the Google equivalent - https://store.google.com/gb/product/google_nest_hub - a while back for my office, but as that's still a work in progress it now lives in the kitchen. I might get the Echo Show to replace it.

Tempted by the dot for cheap surround sound speakers (buying 2) to make wfh a bit more interesting.

However I don't want to use the voice activation as I'm not keen on the worlds biggest shopping site listening to me. Is it possible to turn off?

Yep there is a mute mike button on the top.
