Am I the only Brighton fan on here who used to be a Palace fan?

I see there's a thread on one of our favourite topics on NSC: Were you always a Brighton fan? Every time this comes up I, as someone born in the Croydon area, always hold up my hand and say, "No, I used to be a Palace fan"; in the words of the song my old man really DID say "Be a Palace fan".

However I don't think any one else has ever admitted to it. A few will own up to being born in the Croydon area or moving there at some time, but they're always quick to say "Thankfully I never even went to Selhurst Park let alone became a Palace fan!"

So is it just me and Norman Cook?

Reminds me of that episode of the IT Crowd.

"I used to be a Palace fan"

"I don't care that you're from Iran, I'm not that prejudiced..."

Nope, I flirted with the dirty lady once, but soon had my wings clipped and came back to the real love of my life, oh those heady early 90's! My evil was compounded by Brighton, then Palace, then Brighton. I guess akin to giving the wife's Sister one?

"Takes all sorts to make a world!"

My Mum once bought me a Palace duvet cover, if that counts (she's a Palace fan). My Dad made sure it was swiftly disposed of.

I don't understand how its even possible? I could never support palace, and I would never be able to wear their kit. Even if Brighton no longer existed and I lived in south London could I ever conceive such a thing.

Literally Brighton till I die.

It's possible because I was born and lived in the Croydon area and wasn't even aware Brighton had a football team until I moved to Sussex. HTH

When our kids were young my older sister brought a black plastic bag of kids clothes around. We let the kids dive and in and I almost hyper-ventilated when my lad turned around wearing a Palace shirt .................... shirt straight in the bin, and my lad upstairs to his bedroom.

I have a friend who did the same. I taught him the error of his ways, taking him to the Goldstone to show him the difference, he soon realised he had been a very foolish child. Can't condem anyone for not knowing any better when they were kids but should congratulate them for finding wisdom.

When and why did you switch?
It was a gradual thing. I moved to Lancing when my parents got divorced and I started going to Brighton games with my new friends. This was in early 1966. Then as now kids used to support Brighton and a big club (contrary to popular belief this phenomena didn't start with Sky Sports) and no one batted an eyelid that I supported Palace (and Chelsea!) over Brighton. This was also of course well before the start of the Brighton and Palace Rivalry.

Gradually as I went to more and more Brighton games I became more and more of a Brighton fan, until the 1972 season (I think) when we finished runners-up to Villa and I realised I was a 100% Brighton fan. I can't remember the exact timings but I'm pretty certain the next time I went to Selhurst Park was in 1975 for the Brighton game - and I was supporting Brighton! The strange thing was it didn't feel 'strange' cheering for another team at my former home ground.

Now of course whilst I don't share the deep-seated hatred of Palace that some do I obviously 'hate' them and see them as one of our local rivals. And like all decent, right-minded human beings with a conscience I hate Chelsea with a passion!

Think I remember having this same discussion on NSC a few years back... anyway way back in about 1970ish I had Palace as my second team (the days of Steve Kember and John Jackson) behind Brighton simply cos I liked their strip back then (claret with thin light blue stripes and yellow cuffs - if my memory serves me right). I even had them as my second best subutteo team! But that was a good few years before the bust up between our clubs.... and Brighton were then the Shrimpers rather than the Seagulls! Pompey were our enemy back then ..... but Alan Mullery changed all that!!!!! :)

You may be the only one prepared to admit to this most heinous of crimes.

Isn't it a bit like being an ex junkie? You say you're 'clean' but but one day something inside clicks and knaws at you and with trembling hands you sit staring at your red and blue shirt. Before you know it you are wearing it, your jaw has dropped, little rivers of dribble are oozing from the corners of your mouth, and your shoulders have slouched. You are once again a Nigel.

There is only one answer - exorcism. Drive the evil spirits away.
