After all we have gone through with Falmer, I am slightly uneasy about my potentially hypercritical reaction to Gillinghams plans to build a new stadium in Cuxton which is pretty damn close to where I live. Cuxton is a lovely little village etc ..... suddenly I realise how I must sound to Gills fans. Not that I've campaigned against it or anything, but my initial reaction to the plans were 'horror - they can't build it there!"

Case for the prosecution:
Of course you are a NIMBY sh*t, you are only horrified because the proposal is 'in your backyard'. They need a bigger stadium, and you would be quite happy for them to have it elsewhere. Stop your whinging and SUPPORT the Gills wherever it is planned.

Case for the defence:
It's not comparable to our situation, as their need is not on the same scale. Priestfields capacity of 11,400 is perfectly adequate, as they rarely sell-out. It appears that Scally is really after additional income through leisure facilities, rather than additional turnstile revenue. If that's the case then they should stay put and buy Northfleet leisure centre, and take over a building in Gravesend turning it into a Casino, if they believe that is how they are gonna get rich. But there is absolutely no need for a new stadium. Therefore you are entitled to be against it.

I'm ashamed to think that I have reacted in such a way to reading the plans, but I have. May I'm just a little :censored: after all, or maybe there is a little bit of NIMBY in us all.

I'm currently hanging my head in shame.

Is there a big f*** off dual carriage way between your house and the proposed site? Are there some nasty university buildings fron the 1960's right next to the proposed site?

Gillingham don't need a new stadium, the future of thier club is not in doubt at the Priestfield (why has he bothered building it up recently if they are going to move anyway?).

Don't forget the railway line and the more modern ugly university buildings at brighton.

You need to look at the proposals on merit. To be fair Gillingham aren't in any danger of going out of business if they stay at the Priestfield, and they are rather punching above their usual weight at the minute in terms of league placing anyway.

I thought Priestield had two handsome new stands? (we paid for that - we paid for that). Seems stupid to rip them down and move wholesale.

regardless, you are a nimby sh!t!

The question is - living where you do, how would you feel about the application if you happened to be a Gillingham fan ?

I would liken it to my situation. Behind my humble abode, over my back garden fence in Fishersgate, I have a huge NTL building and its adjoining car park. Personally, as long as my house wasn't being demolished to make way for it, I would be thrilled if the Albion were to build their stadium on that site (I know its too small, but I'm speaking hypothetically). I can only imagine the joy of waking up each morning, drawing back the curtains, and seeing the magnificent main stand just a stones throw away from where I am standing, naked but for my stained and crusty boxer shorts.

Match days would be a joy, as I wander along to my local at lunchtime, sink a few beers, then walk to the ground and take my seat. After the match, I would be home and safely in my armchair by 5pm, ready for Pop Idol. Tickets for the Playoffs or big Cup games ? No problem, as I step outside my front door and walk 20 paces to join the queue. The missus can pop over as and when with alcoholic refreshments and hot bacon sarnies. For those marvellous early-season August games when its nice and warm, I could stoke the barbecue up and have some friends over for a pre-match BBQ feast in my back garden almost up to kickoff time. Or for the Saturday games, I could light up the BBQ immediately afterwards and have a select group of friends, along with Leon and Dick, Martin and perhaps the Man of the Match over, to share a burger and hot dog, and disect the match over a few shandies.

In short Gritty, you need to ask yourself this question. Would you be horrified at a football stadium being built within your general vicinity, or is it the fact that its Gillinghams football stadium ? What if it was the Albions ?

If they're keen to leave Priestfield we should offer them a groundshare at Withdean, quid pro quo like ?

what, you mean rip them off right royally for a few years so we can afford to build a Sussex Stadium 50 000 all seater with the proceeds and still have change for a striker over 5' tall ? :lolol:

Definately support it.

Their stadium is hemmed in and they could do with re-locating. It could do for them what the Madejski did for Reading.

They might be a bunch of Scally pikeys, but I don't see why they shouldn't better themselves.

Seems a shame having spent all our money on doing up the Pissfield, though.

This is a football related development?

Really?

It looks more like major leisure development.

Is it really needed? Does it bring economic and social benefits to the local community? Does Scally have a sustainable transport plan to go with it? If yes, support him. If no, object.

Haven't voted on poll because.....

I don't think you are a sh*t as you have some valid reasons why it shouldn't be built but........

You don't want it in your back yard!!!

Interesting view Easy. If I were to view it purely as a Gills fan, I think I would be reluctant to see the club move at all as I don't see a need for it. £60m development  I'd be worried it would cripple us financially.

On the other hand, the thought of the ground being in the next village (not exactly as close as NTL are to you) would appeal IF I was a Gills fan. But I think the fact that we would be facing possible financial ruin would out weigh that.

Lord B, that's pretty much how I've justified my opposition, to myself. Sounds to me like a business plan that has a football stadium in it. They are after alternative income, and perhaps believe they have an improved chance of getting local approval if they throw the emotional topic of the 'survival of the football club' into it. Without that, there's no way on earth he would get permission for a leisure facility or a Casino (let alone both) on the edge of a sleepy little village like Cuxton.

The BBBC website has an explanation of sorts

Gillingham Football Club have abandoned plans for a new £60m stadium complex and admitted they will have to leave the Medway area to survive.
The club had said Temple Marsh in Cuxton - near Gillingham - was the only site in the Medway area where they could build a 20,000 seater stadium.

But chairman Paul Scally said the Gills would never follow Wimbledon's example by abandoning their roots completely.

He said he was looking at four other sites in Kent for a new ground.

There is no alternative but to leave Medway, which we will do, with heavy hearts

Mr Scally told the BBC last year he wanted to move the club to a new stadium, saying the current home at Priestfield, with its 11,400 capacity was no longer big enough.

In April Gillingham outlined plans for a new stadium and a leisure complex featuring a casino and entertainment facilities.

But Mr Scally revealed on Thursday the plans had been shelved due to the cost of improving transport links to the 54 acre site.

But he confirmed the club's commitment to stay in Kent.

He said: "We will never change the name and do a Milton Keynes Dons.

Gillingham had planned a 54-acre complex next to the River Medway
"We will always remain in Kent, but there are no sites in Medway suitable for a sustainable arena.

"Temple Marsh was the only one, and that has failed principally on the transport issue.

"There is no alternative but to leave Medway, which we will do, with heavy hearts.

"Irrespective of where our home ends up, and it will be in Kent because we are a Kent club, we will continue to work with the people of Medway.

"It's not the council's fault they don't have the land but Gillingham has to develop and it's abundantly clear we have to leave the Priestfield Stadium to compete.

"Frankly, it doesn't work here. Unless we build a sustainable arena and compete in the Coca-Cola Championship we will go backwards and end up in the Conference."

Mr Scally said the four sites in Kent being looked at included two in Gravesham, one in Swale and another in Maidstone.

He said the club were in talks with each of the local councils and hoped to move within four years.

As we have a ground that will only accommodate 7000 approx at the moment then I do feel for them.
Bums on seats bring revenue that is badly needed.

Yes, bums on seats is good, but do they consistently sell-out at the Priestfield?... thought not... voted No...
