After all we have gone through with Falmer, I am slightly uneasy about my potentially hypercritical reaction to Gillinghams plans to build a new stadium in Cuxton which is pretty damn close to where I live. Cuxton is a lovely little village etc ..... suddenly I realise how I must sound to Gills fans. Not that I've campaigned against it or anything, but my initial reaction to the plans were 'horror - they can't build it there!"
Case for the prosecution:
Of course you are a NIMBY sh*t, you are only horrified because the proposal is 'in your backyard'. They need a bigger stadium, and you would be quite happy for them to have it elsewhere. Stop your whinging and SUPPORT the Gills wherever it is planned.
Case for the defence:
It's not comparable to our situation, as their need is not on the same scale. Priestfields capacity of 11,400 is perfectly adequate, as they rarely sell-out. It appears that Scally is really after additional income through leisure facilities, rather than additional turnstile revenue. If that's the case then they should stay put and buy Northfleet leisure centre, and take over a building in Gravesend turning it into a Casino, if they believe that is how they are gonna get rich. But there is absolutely no need for a new stadium. Therefore you are entitled to be against it.
I'm ashamed to think that I have reacted in such a way to reading the plans, but I have. May I'm just a little
after all, or maybe there is a little bit of NIMBY in us all.
I'm currently hanging my head in shame.
