So Eric was right all along to attack the dick with a flying kick as Mathew Simmons is now in court accused of assualting another parent at his sons U13 football match last August.

Take a bow Eric - good call

Indeed. It was a crying shame that he only managed to kick ONE Palace fan in the head and that he didn't have time to maraud, Bruce Lee style, through the entire stand leaving a trail of weeping, distraught and permanently traumatised Palace fans in his wake.

*Waits for the Palace fans to show up and peddle the old myth that Simmons was a Fulham fan actually and to repeat the outright lie that Cantona was directly responsible for the subsequent death of a Palace fan*

It did also give rise to one of the most unbelievable lines ever uttered in a trial. Simmons claims he said 'Off you go Cantona, it's an early shower for you'.

At his subsequent trial for threatening behaviour he drop kicked the prosecution counsel.

Trouble is Eric aimed for his head, couldn't do any damage that way.

Hmmm yes, should have been done for perjury for that. More chance of Dame Judi Dench appearing on This Morning and asking Philip Schofield if he'd ever smashed Holly Willoughby than that chavvy Palace fan addressing Cantona without many uses of the words "f***" and "c*nt".

Simmons went to the German town of Hellunbach after the Cantona incident. Anyone who read about how badly his life fell apart and how he struggled to put it back together would have a modicum of sympathy for the bloke I fear. Then again, this is NSC...

Bloke was a Fulham fan.

Trouble at the FA cup semi final in April lead to the death of a Palace fan, killed by the scum in a pub car park in Walsall. No Cantona incident, we wouldn't have been on the radar of MU. FACT. (you were too busy tied up being shit at the time).

You are, of course, absolutely right. It is a FACT. An indisputable, unarguable, bona fide, grade one FACT.

Not a (massively subjective, misguided) opinion, no sir.

Here is an article (from 2009) from the Croydon Advertiser, the local Fulham newspaper, about Matthew Simmons, resident of that well known district of Fulham, Thornton Heath, and lifelong Fulham fan, who they describe, for some unfathomable reason, as being a Crystal Palace fan.

The Crystal Palace fan famously kung-fu kicked by Eric Cantona says he has no complaints that the episode is being used in the footballer-turned-actor's new film.

Out-of-work builder Matthew Simmons says he still gets phone calls from strangers taunting and threatening him over the incident.

But he told the Advertiser this week he does not mind that he has an unwitting role in the movie Looking for Eric.

Cantona claimed Simmons had verbally abused him at Selhurst Park, as Palace played Manchester United in 1995, and jumped into the crowd.

The Frenchman was banned from football for nine months and given community service.

Simmons, from Kynaston Avenue, Thornton Heath, was sentenced to seven days in jail for threatening language and behaviour.

While Cantona may be revisiting one of his darkest days, Simmons says he just wants to get on with his life.

Speaking about the film, he said: "It means nothing to me. I don't mean that disrespectfully. Whatever has happened, happened.

"No matter what rifts you have got with anyone you can't deprive each other of a living.

"I don't ever want to say anything bad about anybody or anything so what can I say?

"I've got a family, I'm sure he's got a family. It's as simple as that."

Simmons even wishes his old foe success with the new movie, which tells the story of a postman who imagines his hero, Cantona, has entered his life and is becoming his best friend.

He said: "I would rather no one held me back in life because of something and I can't begrudge or hold someone back if they're furthering themselves.

"Arguments, differences of opinion or whatever - it causes trouble."

Simmons says he does not get too worried by the abusive phone calls he still receives.

"Society nowadays is dangerous for everyone, not just for me," he explained.

It was at a press conference shortly after the incident that Cantona offered his famously bizarre explanation for the violent exchange and subsequent press coverage.

He told reporters: "When the seagulls follow a trawler it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea."

Simmons has not had a chance to see the movie and, perhaps unsurprisingly, was not invited to attend a preview screening.

He said: "I'm nothing. They don't even know me, they don't want to even meet me."

Simmons, who had a previous conviction for a violent attack on a petrol pump attendant and was revealed to have attended British National Party rallies, was found guilty of threatening behaviour, fined £500 and banned from every football ground for 12 months. After the verdict he leapt over a table and attacked the prosecuting lawyer. He was sent to prison for seven days for contempt of court.

To this day Simmons insists that what he said to Cantona was neither offensive nor rude. In court he claimed he had told him: "Off, off, off, go on Cantona, go for an early shower." However, Cantona himself and some spectators said that Simmons had, to paraphrase, described him as a Frenchman with an Oedipus complex who should go forth and multiply in France. Cathy Churchman insists the noise made it impossible for anyone to hear what Simmons had said.

There is an interview that Simmons gave to the Guardian about 5 years ago where he says that Fulham were his number one team but that he still went to Selhurst park (at least at that time) so it is fair to say that he was a fulham fan but that in no way removes the fact that he has allied himself to CP as well.

It also then went on to mention how he'd attacked an asian petrol station attendant and gave him a massive shoulder injury (would have been his head if he hadn't taken evasive action) and was prosecuted for that (I think before the Cantona incident). I'll see if I can find it on t'internet.

... and here they are!

How are you spending Cantona Day this year paulie? Just a traditional family celebration for us. Off to see the kids in the Cantanativity in the morning (my lad got the part of St Eric this year and his best friend's playing the evil Simmons!), then we'll sing a few cantacarols, ("oh ah cantona, said oh ah cantona!" being a family favourite) and then back home for the traditional Cantona Day dinner of snails, frogs legs and all the trimmings. Then we'll settle down to watch Cantona's Speech on the telly, and after that we've got a few cans in for the Bond film. Should be a good day!

Ahhh, I can still fondly remember going to the Goldstone for the first game after l'affaire Cantona, and buying my usual copy of Gull's Eye.

The front page of that edition, if memory serves me correctly, read

Cantona Attacks Palace Fan
