This is bad news. not as bad as if Blair has resigned and either a)prescott had taken over or b)Brown, best chancellor in years had become PM instead).
But still not great.

With no Mandelson and Campbell, Blair might have to start talking to Gordon Brown. But then again.

I think though that he had power far in excess of what a non elected figure should have.

very much agree, but then so do the high positions within the civil service...sometimes it takes these people to keep the cogs of the elected body moving smoothly.
