Alex Ferguson

The more I see it shown on TV the more I am convinced that Man U goalkeeper did not touch Baros at any time , he attempted to get both the ball and/or the player but got neither so not a penalty.

Remember that World Cup match when Italy got a pen vs USA in the final seconds to win the match? The US player impeded the Italian attacker and basically obstructed him physically without remotely playing or touching the ball.
Thus, an advantage can be unfairly gained by separating possession from an opposing player without even addressing the ball - which is what Kuschzak did.
While a penalty, it's not a sending-off offence in my book - it should be, only when the act of taking out the player is pre-conceived and deliberate, while Kruschzak only did what keepers are paid to do, try and stop the ball. Kinda like the ball-to-hand handball.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that Fergie was lecturing the Liverpool owners on the need for 'dignity'.

The claims by both Ferguson and Quieroz that the ref was on Pompey's side are absolutely disgraceful, and I hope the FA hand them both hefty fines and touchline bans. "The whole world's against us" is a very, very tired Utd whinge, but it doesn't look like it's going away soon.

Maybe, just maybe though he should concentrate on his superstar players inability to put the ball in the net after completely overrunning Pompey for 95 minutes, instead of whinging about the referee.

Okay, maybe the Ronaldo incident was a penalty, but it wasn't given. Utd had a zillion other chances to score but blew it completely. Why not rant at Rooney and Tevez for not converting their opportunity, or Carrick, or Ronaldo (about 3 times), or Nani, or Anderson etc etc

To quote Alex Ferguson... 'ah, football - bloody hell...'

Sir Alex's comments are out of all proportion to the performance of the referee. Sounds to me like he's softening up the referee's supervisor for the Premiership run-in. Every little helps!

Sir Alex Ferguson has a lot to be angry about, the referee was a disgrace. If we want to see the best players in the world like Cristiano Ronaldo then we need to give them more protection, otherwise they'll go abroad where they get protection.

None of those managers have the desired effect on their teams though. No other team loses as rarely as United. Of course, he's got loads more than just demanding success from his players, but if you're a United player I bet knowing that at full-time you have to face Sir Alex doesn't half 'help' you give everything you've got. At least he keeps that behind closed doors, so if he wants to blame everyone else in public then does it really matter? After the criticism he's given yesterdays ref, you can bet your life that whoever refs them next week won't give anything dubious against them, so his words have done the job in that sense.

It's a fair point, but then that's for the referees to stand up to him.

He is a bully. It does help that he is a good manager, and that results can speak for themselves, but it doesn't alter the fact that far too many people who should be outside his sphere of influence and control are scared of him.

It was a goal scoring opportunity, the chances of either player being in a position to save a goal if Baros hadn't of been brought down were very slim. So a red was correct IMO.

Spot on. Baros had a clear goalscoring opportunity, he would have got his shot off if not fouled so had to be a sending off.

Talking to someone who is clearly a corporate apologist, I can't but feel that that statement is bollocks.

Ronaldo doesn't need 'protecting'. He is a professional footballer - albeit a highly talented footballer, whose skills can be a joy to watch, but whose attitude to fairness and sportsmanship leave a lot to be desired - who, if he is fouled, will be awarded a free-kick. If, in the opinion of the referee, he isn't fouled, he won't. It's the same rules for everyone. EVERYONE.

Bearing in mind that the referee is, of course, human and therefore is prone to making mistakes, one still has to consider the number of times Ronaldo hasn't been touched and he has been awarded a free-kick vastly outweighs the number of times he has been fouled and not awarded free-kicks. It happens. It does not necessarily make the referee a 'disgrace' (a phrase which is, incidentally, an vastly over-used exaggeration).

To single someone out as someone who 'needs protecting' is a product of lazy journalistic, media-snappy phrase invented on behalf of someone who can't cope the physical demands of what was, is and always will be a contact sport.

The fact he threw Eduardo's situation into the comments after the game was a disgusting cowardly, low, cheap shot using someone else's horrific misfortune to justify his own inadequacies. Comments like that are just dirt.

What, Ronaldo is not wanted in this country. We should be kicking lumps out of him until he is forced to f*** off back to where he came from.

Absolutely. Everyone knows he's a great, great manager. It's your interpretation of this bit that shapes your opinion of him. I think he's brilliant, one of my all-time football heroes, but if you look upon his influence on others unfavourably then you hate him!

How can he be a hero of a Brighton fan? He is a manager of one of Brighton's biggest enemies (not that they feel the same way) so should be hated by all Brighton fans in much the same way as people involved in Crystal Palace should be.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to be in a position to exert that kind of influence. However, while it's fair enough that he should try to do so, the authorities need to ensure there ought to be no reason why he should be allowed to exert that authority.

But then, the FA are spineless airheads.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, teams of skill and grace like Portugal and Croatia, y'know, teams that at least TRY to play The Beautiful Game, qualify for Euro 2008...
