HELP!. Can someone please settle a completely pointless pub argument for me. I say Gerrry played on the right wing but my mate says he was on the left wing. Likewise, I say Eddie played left back (although I think he played midfield as well), my mate swears he played on the right.

Anyone out there know?

I seem to remember Ryan playing on the left. That Hughton tackle happened near what is now the away section at Selhurst and we were behind the goal, attacking our end - I think.

Also wasn't Steve Penney our right winger at the time?

I remember Steve Penney playing right and Smillie playing left but seem to remember Ryan mostly playing on the right. His mazey run in the cup against man city was certainly on the right wing anyway. Perhaps he was equally bad on either wing :lolol:

Eddie Spearitt was a number 3 in the days when that meant he played left back. He had the original long throw.

I was in Tescos in Portsmouth (ugh) a few months back, obviously with an Albion shirt on and i saw this bloke in an Ipswich shirt with SPEARITT on the back

He told me that Eddie Spearitt was his uncle and how he always looked for the Albion's results, even though he lives in New Zealand now

Once a Seagull.....

I seem to remember that Eddie started off at Ipswich...must be some sort of family connection there.

Gerry Ryan would have been Mark McGhee's dream player. Tough, tenacious, bit of skill and always gave 100%. Henry Hughton should have his face repeatedly hit with a pick axe for that savage assault with intent. The Licensed Victuallers industry probably wasn't moaning mind.

Oh, and he could play anywhere. Face it, he played at right-back in the FA Cup Final.

I thought he came from Ipswich and thats what me go over and speak to the bloke. He said the family were from there. I didnt see any tractors in the car park, but you never can tell down in Portsmoof.

Eddie Spearitt was in the first Albion side I ever saw. Awesome

Should know more about this as I use his name on here. I believed that Eddie Spearritt was a scouser but, in fact, he was born in Lowestoft, Suffolk. Seem to remember he was signed from Ipswich and he made his debut in the 1968/69 season.

He was my first Albion hero in the days of Kit Napier and Nobby Lawton.

Although I remember him as no. 3, he seemed to play a lot of games as an inside forward (midfielder to the younger members) and scored 25 goals in 232 games.

Sadly, Eddie was at Hillsborough for that tragic cup semi-final and his son, Adam, was killed in the crush.

Eddie Spearritt definitely came from Ipswich and wore the No10 shirt as an old fashioned Inside Left in the traditional 2 - 3 - 5 formation of those days. Finished up with us by playing at left back as he got older.

The first player I remember with the long thrown at Brighton was in the early 50s Jimmy Langley who played at left back and threw the ball from the half way line into the 6 yard box probably as far as Andy Legge threw it at Wembley. You could drive a bus through Jimmy's legs as he was so bandy but what a full back if only we had one as good now!

In fact we have had a number of good left backs.

I think Gerry Ryan played on both wings but when he was injured against Palace was playing Right Wing because Henry Houghton was a left back.
