Urban myth

Undisclosed six figure fee including appearances and wages, but don't let that stop you perpetuating it.

It's still up to £150000 on a player who realistically is as good as George Wear's cousin at Saints, however the money is made up.

Ipswich have got a bargain. Alan Lee is nothig special but the going rate for a striker who can score goals at Championship level must be £1 million plus!

Hard to say it's a bargain as we don't know what he's on.

I was told by a Reading fan he was hijacked by Coppell who gazumped the club he was going to meet.......................us.

Yes, we had been tracking him for a while. I guess when Coppell said he wasn't going to steal players from us he probably meant the ones we had under contract :)

If that is the case why do we even bother to look. There are proably half a dozen in the championship worth that kind of money it is definitely not 'the going rate'.

he goes for £100k - less than what we paid for turienzo. and if he takes a wage cut to stay at cardiff then chances are he would of taken a wage cut to come here

How on earth do you know he took a wage cut to go to Ipswich? They are a recent Premiership club with a successful infrastructure and they still have a huge surplus from their summer transfer dealings. Do you think it's realistic we could beat them in a bidding war on wages?

It may have been Coppell who first noticed him while he was our manager.

An absurd assumption as he may well have taken a wage cut from £10k a week to £8k still way above out range. I don't know the wages he was on and neither do you or indeed anybody outside of his circle.

Alan Lee rumoured to be one of Mcghee's targets has joined Ipwich from Cardiff City for £100,000. I doubt we could match it.

would have been a great signing as he always scores against us (Cardiff and Rotherham) and we still got to go to Portman rd. Im backing him to score that day

Too far from the sun
If a player's any good then he'll probably have more than one offer to consider. In order for them to sign for us they probably need to fit the following:

(1) Live in SE England or have a good reason to want to move there anyway
(2) Want first team football rather than just reserves/bench at Reading, Southampton or whoever
(3) Not have massive wage demands
(4) Not cost a huge transfer fee
(5) By signing they would actually improve the squad
(6) Don't care that every other week they play in a stadium out of eastern europe in front of about 6000 with all the atmosphere of the moon
(7) Be prepared to scrap for every result with a reasonable chance of being relegated in May

There are probably more but these seem the most important. Now you are Alan Lee / Kevin Doyle / any other recent rumoured transfer target. Brighton come in for you but you also hear that Reading / Ipswich are interested. Given that they will pay you more than Brighton, who would you sign for?

This was in the Argus in November. If we couldn't afford Lee in the summer when we still had the Turienzo money it was rather unlikely we could have found the funds now.

"One candidate to replace the centre half turned goalscoring centre forward was Cardiff's Alan Lee but both the fee and wages for the former Rotherham frontrunner were way beyond Albion's reach.

Lee, not even one of Cardiff's first choice strikers, ironically came on to net the Welshmen's winner at Withdean last month."
