Albion have been handed a chance to move back into the top three of the Championship by FA Cup hosts Hull.
Their 1-0 defeat at Preston today leaves the Seagulls level on points with Steve Bruce's side with a game in hand against Ipswich at the Amex tomorrow night.
Paul Gallagher scored the only goal of the game for Preston in the second half at Deepdale.
Albion's next away game is at Hull in the third round of the FA Cup on January 9 after Ipswich's visit and another home fixture against Wolves on New Year's Day.
Burnley, immediately below Albion in fifth, narrowed their deficit to three points with a 4-0 victory over lowly Bristol City at Turf Moor.
Andre Gray hit a hat-trick and Scott Arfield was also on target as Burnley bounced back to form after a barren run.
Middlesbrough can go back to the top of the table by beating seventh-placed Sheffield Wednesday at home (5.15pm).
Leaders Derby, currently one point ahead of Boro with a better goal difference, are at Leeds tomorrow night.
