I don't understand this view of contentious, put yourself in Bart's shoes a cross comes in towards a player in the middle right in your eye sight do you:
a) decide the player will have no impact on the game as he will leave the ball and look straight towards the other player or
b) think the player in the middle will make an effort to play the ball?

It is contentious in the sense that yes, it was the correct application of the laws (albeit a subjective one about Armstrong’s leg movement), but it is one which is very rarely applied, in real time or retroactively.

There will be hundreds of such incidents in goals across the Football League and PL, and next week a similar one (or more) won’t be given.

Again I turn back the argument - if Welbeck had done that and Rutter tapped in at the far post, our fans would be incensed and saying it is a conspiracy to keep us out of the top echelons of the PL.

It was a very harsh decision based on general precedent for what constitutes interfering with play.

If he isn't interfering with play on the penalty spot then no one ever is. It's offside every day of the week even if the player is wearing blue and white stripes.

Everyone could have predicted this - our attitude against these lower teams is so poor and needs to change. The post match interviews from Hurzeler and O’Riley both say we lacked intensity and were sloppy which shows it’s an attitude problem when we play these teams.

Well I’ve got a Swedish NSC Poster conspiracy level theory about that… I think this late flag business is a word in the ear from VAR saying “stick your flag up, it looks offside” then doing the forensic examination afterwards.

It’s better to award a goal that was ruled out than to disallow one that was given.

Tomorrow, I will be linesmen for an U14s game of football. I'll be flagging that situation offside all day long. It's mental that a bloke standing more or less on the penalty spot, 2 yards off is even a debate about being offside.

Put yourself in probably soon to fired Martin's shoes. Southampton away to if on form Brighton should be another away defeat because apart from one player The Saints from what i saw no player is even Championship level. Fair enough play on the break but otherwise it was sit deep and waste as much time as possible which they did very successfully although helped greatly by a referee who was quite happy with that tactic being employed and as F/H points out it's breaking these teams down is often harder than sides with quality players and a open positive game plan just look at Citeh or Spuds both press high looking for goals but can be open at back.

Downes shouldn’t have even been on the pitch. It’s frustrating to see us work so hard against teams like City and Arsenal, then go all passive and toothless in front of whoever this season’s PL whipping boys are.

I hope FH tears the whole squad a new one frankly. We’re never going to progress beyond mid-table if we can’t bring the same concentration, energy and hunger to these matches that we bring to competing against the top clubs.

I don’t blame FH, we’ve been like this for a very long time. Until we’re determined and hungry for all 38 games, and can maintain that higher level, we’re going to keep letting ourselves down.
