When I was 7 my reading age was 18+ , the rot started in the 1980's so now kids who grew up under a Thatcher leadership dont give a toss if their offspring are just as thick as they were.

With the emphasis firmly on the typed word, is it really essential to have good handwriting these days?

My handwriting has always been extremely poor.

I think teachers may choose to only correct a few spellings because the alternative would be to correct everything and it could possibly have a negative, demoralising impact for infants if they see their work covered in red writing.
....and that is exactly the kind of woolly thinking, started in the sixties and seventies, that has got us into the illiteracy mess this country's in now.

I agree to a certain extent but surely the test is not whether your handwriting is neat but the quality of the knowledge you are conveying. I know most of us use electonic methods for typing etc, but students should still be able to write properly. I would even suggest that fewer marks should be awarded for coursework not completed within a classroom and more for the written exam.

i finding shocking you believe that statistic outright without additional information. for example, what defines "white working class", what are the numbers for girls, what was the number in 1996, what is the number for "white middle class" boys... without any context this is meaningless and frankly on first impression probably bollocks.

This might help:

A mixture of social depriviation, cultural and social expectations all seem to play a part.

I don't think it's woolly at all. It focuses a child on what is next in their developmental stage of developing good literacy. What is woolly is covering a paper with 30-odd corrections and hoping some of them will stick.

Children learn to crawl before they learn to walk before they learn to run. There is no point in giving instructions or trying to teach a child how to run before they've learnt to walk. Similarly, I wouldn't correct a child on the finer points of grammar before they've learnt the basics. What they need to focus on is what's next.

It would be impossible to educate children successfully without any positive input from their family. [...]

The state can only do so much. ... However, whilst I don't think the education system is without it's faults, I would suggest the main reason any child fails at school is due to the lack of positive parental input.

so it seems that compulsory* education for all 11+ is redundant, if the parents dont send the kids to school why bother as they wont backup and reinforce the teaching.

i'm not advocating that, just highlighting where that train of thought would seem to lead. if you know that children are not supported by parents then the system must compensate for that in the education system provided. parental assistance should make the difference between getting one grade or another, not essential to obtaining the minimum standards expected.

* lol, yes wrong twice. i thought it was wrong, but had spelt it how i say it. tend to do that on t'internet hence lack of capitals too. funny though because as i recall this was one of the techniques taught ...

Exactly, all we are witnessing now is the after shock of Thatcher's Britain.

That f*ck everyone else, I'm alright Jack society is now starting to bear it's fruits.

Well done all those who continued to vote for them.

There are people in this thread happy to blow smoke up otyher peoples arse left right and centre.

Boys education took a dive in the early 90's with changes in the education system. You need to ask about some of the piss poor reasons given in here like a lack of male teachers, is there anything new in it?

If not then its not an explanitary factor. Speaking to Tories only recently they put the reason down to letting the left run amok in the education system, EVEN DURING THE LAST 17 TORY YEARS. tHEY say to me it aint going to happen again so be sure to see the shit hit the fan when the tories get in.

When the idiot Cameron talks about a cultural war against political correctness he means the BBC and the education establishment.

Remember you heard it hear first.

It's Labour's fault because they have been in power for 12 years. Whoever is responsible, Labour have had the chance to put it right, but have failed. So yes, now it will be the Tories turn to have a go.

I think the schools should get back to basics.my 8 year old son comes home with things like-make a Victorian board game as his home work!.What the fucks that all about?.That will be another one for the parents to compete against each other then.
Every other week it seems he has to go in dressed as someone FFS.You wait, its parents evening soon and his teacher is going to get both f***ing barrels.
