Might be booking a week away near Porthcawl at the end of May.

Have absolutely no idea about the area so I thought I would throw the question open to all the widely travelled posters on here.

The local TI site goes into superlatives about the beaches and the beauty of the coastline as well as there being much to do but it is hardly an independent view.

What say you about a family holiday in the area?

I live in Cardiff and have been to Ogmore beach a few times which is very nice - a couple of nice pubs in the area too ... think one is called the Pelican!

Haven't been to Porthcawl ...

I've only been to Porthcawl once...and I was very young. I seem to recall that it was all right, but there are better places in Wales.

The coastline around the Gower is stunning; some lovely beaches - it's a good place for a family holiday. We're going there this summer, I think, so it's good enough for the Gwylans.

There are some great beaches in Wales - I spent a lot of family holidays there when I was young and loved it.

And ignore MAX's grumpiness: the countryside is beautiful and the Welsh are perfectly hospitable - you'll have a great time.

Best you ask Leon Knight !!!

It depends what you want from a "Family Holiday".

A superb beach, where there's not much else apart from sand, rocks to sit on and rock pools? Try Southerndown - about five miles from Porthcawl as the seagull flies, probably ten miles by road. You'll need a car to get there.

There's a good panoramic picture here:-

Porthcawl is more of a resort:-

... and it's got the Coney Beach fairground:-

If you want everything that a traditional British family seaside holiday can offer, I'd suggest going a bit further west to Tenby:-

Ahhh good old Newport, i actually moved to Cwmbran, when i came here some 20 odd years ago, im sure you remember Cwmbran ? just up the road really from newport, like everywhere in the country nowadays though, all the areas are changing so much.

I must say though, out of all the places ive lived, WITHOUT a shadow of a doubt, BRIGHTON is the best place in the WORLD !!!!

Cwmbran had hardly started when I lived in Newport. As far as I recall, it was just a small place near Croesyceiliog, not the Crawley of Gwent that it has since become.

IMPORTANT message to Perry Milkins ...

... Do NOT make Cwmbran the centre for your family holiday.
