something has happened to me computer and i don't know what. when starting internet explorer i get the message that microsoft office xp professional with frontpage is attempting to install something. but then after a short wait i get an error saying:

error 1311. source file not found. c:/documents and settings/ben/desktop/office1.cab verify the file exists and that you can access it.

what can i do to solve the problem. it seems serious and although if i cancel installation i can carry on using the internet, i would still like to sort it out. please also bare in mind that i do not have the installation cd. what can i do?

just realised that this problem keeps occuring with every application i attempt to open. every one works ok if i cancel the installation (as far as i can tell) but it's certainly no internet problem. i have looked on other sites for a solution but get nowhere. this is bad. please help!

Keeps occuring with *every* application or just Microsoft ones?

You will have to reinstall Office for it. Or change OS, theres a lot less problems this side of the fence :)

OFFXP: "Error 1311. Source File Not Found..." Error Message When You Try to Install Office

SYMPTOMS
When you try to install Office XP from the CD on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based workstation, you may receive an error message similar to the following in the verbose log:

Error 1311. Source file not found(cabinet): D:\filename.cab. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.

You then cannot complete the installation.

NOTE: This behavior may occur when you try to install any Windows Installer-based program.

CAUSE
This behavior may occur if the Windows 2000 security policy is set to restrict CD access to the locally logged-on user only. The Windows Installer does not install the software as the locally logged-on user; if that policy is in effect, Windows Installer cannot access the CD.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, copy the contents of the Office CD to a folder on your hard disk or to a network share, and then run Office Setup from this folder. To do this, follow these steps:
1. On your desktop, double-click My Computer.
2. Double-click the local or network drive on which you want to create a new folder.
-or-
On the Tools menu, click Map Network Drive, type a server and share path, click OK, and then double-click that network drive.
3. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.
4. Type a name for the new folder, and then press ENTER. For example, type OfficeXPCD.
5. Insert the Office CD into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Hold down SHIFT as you insert the CD to prevent Setup from starting automatically.
6. In My Computer, right-click the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then click Explore.
7. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
8. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
9. Right-click the folder that you created in step 3, and then click Paste.
10. When all the files have been copied to the new folder, quit all other programs that are running, and then double-click Setup.exe in the folder that you created in step 3 to start Windows Installer and Office Setup.
11. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the Office installation.

MYOB, some people don't want to use anything else apart from Internet Explorer or Windows, even with all the associated risks.

I don't see why, Firefox is smallest, faster, more secure and actually respects W3C standards.

Expect to see the death of "IE Only" sites soon, IE usage has dropped below 90% - that may sound massive, but you don't lock out ten percent of users.

I've just started using Firefox at home, and it's very good. Being able to open links in separate tabs is great, and the pop-up blocker actually works, all the time!!
