Everyone goes on about 1990, but we were truly shocking in the group games, Belgium, and cameroon and scraped through only to lose to an average German team.

Why do we have to always go to one extreme or another. In 1990 we were probably a 7/10 team and people talk like we were world beaters. This time we were maybe a 5 or 6/10 team and suddenly we are the worse England team in history. It's just crap frankly. The margins are very very tiny.

I would assess performances as

USA 5/10
Algeria 3/10
Slovenia 5/10
Germany 3/10

The scary thing in my mind is how the Euros in two years time are going to be even harder than the games we had at this World Cup.

Germany, Spain, Holland, Portugal, Russia and a new, younger France & Italy. Add to that the host nations of Poland and Ukraine neither of which anyone will want to play, Capello has got his work cut out.

I must say, I really enjoyed watching Germany today, they were class and schweinsteiger was superb. The added bonus was watching them serve it up large to those pesky corned beef merchants. Now a holland v Germany final would be class, they f***ing hate each other!

I never thought our loss to Germany was a disgrace but I felt the Germans were at the complete top of their game.

I can now see they are an exceptional TEAM with a few individually brilliant players.

Spain V Germany is a very hard game to call.

I thought that; but I went to the Euro 2004 game between the the two in Porto and frankly it was no big deal. The Dutch fans outnumbererd the Krauts by 3-1 but there was little evidence of hate. The Germans gave good support vocally but the majority of the Dutch fans were pissed/spaced out.

I watched the '74 Germany v Holland final in Holland and would love a repeat: Hup Holland!! :bigwave:

I love all this retrospective straw-clutching. I wonder how many Australians are thinking "We should be in the semi-finals. We proved we're as good as England and we're obviously better than Argentina. If only things had been slightly different we could be looking forward to playing Holland now."

There was no 'disgrace' in losing to Germany. Unlike us they're a top-ranked football nation with an amazing record and, once again, they were simply better than us - end of story. As has been pointed out the 'disgrace' was drawing 0-0 with Algeria and also I think taking the ball into the corners for the last five minutes against Slovenia in order to protect a 1-0 lead was a bit 'disgraceful'. A top nation wouldn't have done that.

Actually, scrub that, I've changed my mind, it IS a disgrace. Not so much the result but the fact that the Germans have always been so much better than us. And looking at another thread (and the responses) on here: "Where can I take my five year old son to get coaching? It ain't gonna get better any time soon.

I still think that we made them look good by having noone in position in defence at any time. They do have a momentum now and no fear - the Spain game will be interesting, possibly the only interesting game left.

Losing 4-1 to Germany was our biggest defeat EVER in World Cup Finals, and we've played plenty of truly great sides along the way.

The Argentina/Germany score has no bearing on the England performance , in the same way that the Serbia/Germany score is irrelevant.

The final score was 4-1 but it could just as easily been 6 or 7-2. Last night a four-goal margin flattered Germany slightly.

That is about right. If the Albion played as badly as England did against Algeria I would be furious, for England to not even be able to string two passes together is unforgivable. Capello should have been fired on the back of that performance alone. Anyone who disagrees should watch the game again, simply it was the worst England performance I have seen in 25 years.

Its not scary, just except it will be the same old story.

That is about right. .

So given that England drew 0-0 with Algeria and that got a score of 0, which is the lowest you can get, that means a loss to Algeria couldn't have scoredd any worse according to US. So obviously thats not about right but over the top tabloidese rubbish displaying a complete lack of perspective.

A few differences I have noticed:

The Germans play as a TEAM - not a bunch of individuals.

There is a sense that when they shoot they are likely to score - I never feel that secure about England (which is perhaps superstition and fear!) (actually in some of the qualies I was feeling more confident about them scoring)

They didn't go into the tournament expecting to win it.

Just my 2pennies worth.

The mark is for the performance not the result. England have never played worse than in that game, therefore I believe that the lowest possible mark is appropriate.
