That was then, this is now. 48 goals in the Championship is good...

Yep. We can pass verdict on 17/18 shortly , sounds like you already have Icy, but why be so grudging our strike force last season ?
"Good" ? - 48 goals for an outlay of £6m ? - a bloody miracle more like.

That was then, this is now. 48 goals in the Championship is good but having not added a striker and having moved up a division it is not unreasonable to raise a Roger Moore eyebrow on how these three (two at the moment) might fare this year without addition..

Reading Hughton in today's Express does not fill me with confidence for this season either, although I cannot argue with anything he is saying.

Currently we are Championship bound imo.

and the way that's going the Albion will be lucky to stay in that, next season.

No I have not passed judgement but the way things are at the moment and the noises coming from the club do not sound encouraging. Could all be a big bluff I accept.

I am not at all grudging about last season but it was LAST season which I loved, as I did the one before. My mind is now on this season and I am concerned that we will be relegated before we start if we don't get the required strikers

The grown ups are talking about strikers bought by AMEX era Albion.

I'm sorry for joining a thread midway and not reading through 20 pages to check that AMEX era striker meant bought during the AMEX era and not played during the AMEX era. I'll leave you to your 'grown up' conversation.

No doubt the club will sign our record transfer striker soon. What I think is different this season ( other than being in the most loony league in the world) is our apparent change in formation to 4-4-1-1. This elevates the number 10 to become the seasons defining player for me. If Gross performs then so will BHA.Murray has that goal scorers nack of being in the right place at the right time, We just have to worry about injury and in particular suspension and of course his complete lack of pace, as world class defenders will draw fouls out of him-being a yard quicker- and he will lash out in frustration. Knocky must be good for x 10 goals, March x 7 - 10 also.Gross needs to get between x 8-12 which is more than doable for a number 10. So for me i expect the striker budget to go on a Glen Murray upgrade - and yes that is Alvaro Negredo.

I think you're being a tad ambitious at how prolific Gross, March and Knockaert will be, but I'm with the thrust of your argument. If we remain defensively solid, I'd reckon 40-50 goals will be sufficient. They reckon that a good rule of thumb is expect a ratio of 4:2:1 from forwards, midfielders and defenders respectively. I appreciate that that is somewhat scuppered by playing a 4-4-1-1 formation but, hopefully, you get my point.

Only a tad?

AK, March & Gross will be lucky to get 10 between them, and in doing so they'll have outperformed themselves, esp if most of them are crucial goals.

Currently I'm not expecting GM to be aimlessly holding up play at all. Expecting GM and Izzy Brown to be served up plenty of juicy chances by Knocky and Solly March. Pretty sure that will catch out a lot of the Premier League cannon-fodder duffers a lot of the time. Despite all the Sky Spin, two thirds of of the Premier League are bang average.

Well l'd love to think it's going to be as easy as you seem to suggest. Her's hoping.

Yawn. It's about time some folks took their heads out of the sand. Anyone who is satisfied with how our recruitment is going this summer must be easily pleased. No offence meant of course.

I'm more than happy to take a bet with you on that one. I believe you are totally wrong, are you seriously suggesting even ignoring AK and SM, Gross will not be in with decent shooting chance from the edge of the box less than x 10 times in the season, let along headers and scraps inside the box?

Finally.
It's taken all day to get pot properly stirred, I nearly ran out of bait.

Still it's always an added bonus to get Pravda defending the signing of literally a bazillion poor strikers.
Made all the more special by the fact he knew I was being 'playful', he just can't help himself - bless.

You've said 3 of our players, who aren't strikers will EACH score around 10 goals, as much as we'd all love it, that just doesn't happen.
Last season 8 teams scored 43 goals or less.
One of those being West Brom who got to their customary 40 points so quickly, they momentarily had delusions of Europe.

I added the caveat of and in doing so they'll have outperformed themselves because I genuinely believe that.
If those 3 got into double figures between them, the team would be well on their way, assuming it has the strikers to carry the burden of goals.

No offence taken, a-hole... Sorry, no offence meant :glare:
No problem. Most people invariably resort to bad language when they've lost, or are losing, an argument so I would have expected no less of you.

so you take out the like for like replacements out and we have signed 1 player and 1 loan . Come on now ! The last 5 years have all been geared to getting to the so called promised land and we get there and then have an absolute shambles of a summer signings wise compared to how we all anticipated . It looks very much by the now almost daily articles released softening us up about budgets and restraints that we are possibly not going to really get much more major in . This is before we start about ak and sb being injured .
I am all for being prudent but come on , if you don't have s proper go season 1 then you know what will happen . Then when you look at spending in the championship we are not going to be going for it there either .

To not have a proper go and give us every chance I'm not sure what it's all about anymore .

Still, there's still time to go and all maybe ok
