As far as policing is concerned, why don't we have a national traffic police force?

The trouble with the current arrangements is that all-purpose forces like Sussex Police have to resolve the dilemma about what is more important - traffic policing or crime prevention/detection.

Most motorists seem to go along with the line of argument that makes it OK to say to a traffic cop "Why aren't you out catching PROPER criminals, instead of picking on the poor, innocent motorist?"

Motorists are NOT "innocent". They are potential killers.

Just to add, that having chatted to a Traffic Officer at whist leaving Withdean the other week, I asked what he was doing in the ground. Basically his reply was that the new Chief would rather not have a Traffic only division and put all the officers in one pot.

I personally find that unbelievable, and unacceptable. But hey ho.

That is a crazy idea. The good thing about the police is that they have different specialisations, only those who are dedicated to that type of duty get to perform them. Next thing they will be saying lets get rid of the dog section and just let ordinary beat officers go out with a dog when one is needed, that would be absolutely crazy, most would probably end up getting bitten themselves. And as for the mounted section...

Never understood why they got rid of the mounted section in Sussex.

My dad was a dog handler for 35 years in Brighton and he is disgusted with the PC (scuse the pun !!!) way the force is run these days.....ooops....not allowed to say police FORCE as it is an intimidating word...it's police SERVICE
