...plus the number of people you still see using mobile phones whilst driving, it is crazy. I have come up with a radical plan, get rid of speed cameras and the camera partnerships and pay for more traffic policemen to uphold the rules of the road. I am sure it would cut deaths in the long run, after all a speed camera won't stop someone drinking and driving or using their mobile phone, regardless of what speed they are travelling at, but more traffic cops will!

The Firle straight is now far safer since the recent improvements. Although no matter how many safety measures you put in, you can't engineer anything for complete feckwits. Like the bloke who went around the traffic island on the Firle straight the other week thus driving head on in my direction on my side of the road!!!

As far as policing is concerned, why don't we have a national traffic police force?
The trouble with the current arrangements is that all-purpose forces like Sussex Police have to resolve the dilemma about what is more important - traffic policing or crime prevention/detection.
Most motorists seem to go along with the line of argument that makes it OK to say to a traffic cop "Why aren't you out catching PROPER criminals, instead of picking on the poor, innocent motorist?"
Motorists are NOT "innocent". They are potential killers.

I don't disagree for you about motorists being innocent, driving a car badly is like walking round with a loaded gun and the safety catch off, you might have a mishap and nobody gets hurt, or someone totally innocent could get killed.
I just think that knowing that there were more traffic police on the road acts as a visible deterrant, whereas people drive like arseholes most of the time and just slow down where they know that there are cameras.

Well said Lord B. I go to Canada 2 or 3 times a year and notice how the highways are policed by traffic cops who pull over idiots but also keep roads flowing as quickly as possible after an incident. They realise that it is important to keep delays to a minium to reduce driver frustration. The sight of markeed police cars has a salutary affect on drivers, me included.

The accident happened in torrential rain at about 1515 BST on Saturday on the A27 at Firle, East Sussex.
Police said a blue Renault and a silver Vauxhall were in collision, leaving six people trapped in the vehicles.
The girl suffered multiple injuries and died at Eastbourne District General Hospital. Police asked for witnesses.

A woman in her 40s and a man in his 30s were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

A Sussex Ambulance Service spokeswoman said conditions were very wet, and ambulance crews had to work in torrential rain.
Forecasters said up to six millimetres of rain fell in the area between 1200 BST and 1800 BST.
Ambulance officer Glenn Borthwick said: "Having been in the ambulance service for 20 years, this was one of the most serious [crashes] I have attended."
