Not one, but 10 interesting facts about our feathered namesakes.

1. They are caring and attentive parents. Both the male and female pair for life and take turns to incubate, feed and protect the chicks.
2. They will eat or try to eat almost anything. Which probably explains why they can be found in Croydon.
3. They can live a long time. Up to 40 years in captivity but typically only 10 in the wild.
4. They can learn, remember and pass on behaviour. They have been seen furiously stamping their feet in unison in order to immitate rainfall and trick earthworms to rise to the surface, and also seen adults teaching their chicks how to smash open shellfish
5. They are all terrain. Although their large webbed feet can make them appear comical and clumsy on land.
6. They have a small claw half way up their lower leg which they use to prevent being blown off narrow ledges when they sit down or roost.
7. They can drink salt water this is because seagulls have a special pair of glands right above their eyes, specifically designed to flush the salt from their systems through openings in the bill.
8. Juvenile birds form nursery flocks and will be watched over by a few adult males. Where they will play, fight and learn the skills needed for survival. They will stay with the flock until they are old enough to breed.
9. Seagulls naturally inhabit shear cliff faces but have recently come to live on our roofs and amoung our chinmey pots. This is because humans provide easy pickings and gulls are either clever or lazy depending on your point of view.
10. They have excellent eyesight, better than you or me and unlike most birds their eyes can move in their sockets.

The time separating the Stegosaurus and T-Rex is greater than the time separating the T-Rex and us. Yep, the Stegosaurus had already been extinct for approximately 80 million years before Tyrannosaurus came along. MIND BLOWN.

Butterflies don’t piss. They drink enough liquid for subsistence. Any extra is emitted as a pure water mist from their abdomens.

If you could fold a piece of paper in half 100 times it would be as thick as the radius of the known universe.

Question. 1) If your car travelled at the speed of light , what would happen when you switched your lights on?
2) what did they call barn owls before there were barns?

The speed of light is 300,000 km/s

A light year is how fast light travels in one year (at 300,000 km/s)

Our nearest star - Alpha Centauri - is 4 light years away

So, if we could build a spacecraft that can travel at light speed, it would still take a round trip of EIGHT YEARS to visit even our nearest star after the Sun.
