At the risk of it all kicking off again, do any people here have much experience of getting a job via a dedicated jobs site such as Monster.co.uk etc.?

How does it work compared with going through a "normal" recruiting agency? Is there any "after-sales" involved? Do you feel less ripped off, as some people on here obviously do when going through an agency?

Disclaimer: These are meant to be serious questions, but if it does spark a riot then offers of snacks, beverages, or pictures of Catherine Zeta Jones will be considered acceptable responses.

as 10cc say, not in hove
jobsites like that are normally nothing more than a message board where agents post opportunities, so they are as good or as bad as any other way.

personally, i think they're pretty good. in the world of finance gaapweb and efinancialcareers are both excellent

Never got a job from applying for the one the jobs listed, got both my previous and current jobs by having my CV listed on irishjobs.ie and monster.ie respectively - it effectively allows employers/agencies/recruiters to pick who they think might be better from a larger pool. Was effortless, barring having to do 5 interviews across three companies (and getting offered all three jobs in the end)

Should add that, here at least, they prioritise "newer" CVs - so tweak the CV listing or skills page or whatever every few days/weeks to bump your CV back up the listings.

I always use www.jobserve.com.

Job websites are like a clearing house for jobs. Much preferable to signing on with a particular agency, because there's a much wider range of jobs available.

They're free to use. The agency pays. To apply for the job, just click on it, attach your CV, and maybe follow up with a phone call. The job website won't rip you off or trouble you in any way again. The job agency, on the other hand, welll... just ask Frank.

Job boards are just that. A good way of advertising a vacancy. Generally you apply through the job board just like you would through a newspaper ad, directly to the company or the agency that are advertising on them.

They do not offer the same personal service that you can get through a recruitment consultancy. So for advice and guidance with the whole job hunt, an agency would be a good option.

Sadly the only time I registered with Monster I go so much junk email/spam that it annoyed me so much I forwared every message from them to the trash can and forgot about it.
