A question for those of you who remember 1966

I was wondering, was the German national anthem booed before the final?

I can remember 1966 but cannot remember the details (due to being old)

I don't think it was either. What I do remember is the amount of Union Jacks being waved by England fans, not St. George Crosses!

I was 5, but I remember wearing my World Cup Willie badge.....who was dressed in Union Jack Colours. Also remember our house going mental....if only we could do it again!

I've been told since that there was no booing at all, ever.

"Red White and Blue! World Cup Willie" Ahh! They don't write songs like that any more. Yes, 'World Cup Willie' was the official emblem of the 1966 World Cup. From memory it was some type of dog wearing a union jack waistcoat. As smudge says we were all a lot more ignorant then.

I was 9, I don't really remember the anthems, but I don't recall any booing. I do remember my Dad saying it was disgusting that they'd allowed Germans into the ground.

I went to all of the group games at Villa Park - West Germany -v- Spain, West Germany -v- Argentina and Argentina -v- Spain.

There was no booing of the anthems in those days. What I do remember is that all the brummies supported Argentina. Mainly because their fans were so brilliant. Not that they brought many.

Can't speak for the final. For reasons that escape me, I was in Wales at the time and all I managed to do was watched part of it through the window of a TV shop in Llandudno.

I do remember the Germans arriving in goosestep singing the Horst Wessel song and saluting in a funny manner. Then there was that sudden invasion of Poland after the Russian linesman gave Hurst's second goal. Also a lot of brown leather lederhossen, cuckoo clocks (that may have been Austria) and smart helmets .... but no, I don't think we booed their national anthem .....

Oh how we sang and cheered .... Mr Wilson was so proud of us!

Wasn't it Ken Wolstenholme who said before the match that if the Germans beat us at our national game, we can gain some satisfaction in the knowledge that we have beaten them twice this century at their national game?

I do! Although I didn't see the game at the time as I was with the Cubs taking part in re-enactment of the relief of the Siege of Mafeking at Withdean Stadium!

I do remember Nobby Stiles doing an absolutely DISGUSTING tackle in the match against France that should have seen him sent off and banned for 12 games. The FA told Ramsey to drop him but Ramsey refused. Strangley stuff like that gets forgotten when we talk about 'cheating Argies' and 'dirty foreigners'

Don't even remember us playing France but I clearly remember how 'kin lucky we were against Portugal inspired by Eusabio. No wonder he looked so thrilled when they beat us in Euro 2004!

Bloody hot day and we all sang GOSBTS .... long before it became an Albion anthem!!!!

On the topic of booing the National Anthem, I thought it started at a game against Argentina in 1980 (i.e. pre Falklands) because their anthem goes on for about 15 minutes. Though now I have looked and I think it must be earlier than that. I have a flier from the next game at Wembley (a week later aginst Northern Ireland) quote "this habit we seem to be getting into of booing and whistling our opponents' National Anthem". That would suggest it was a newish habit then.

I wonder therefore if it was connected with the Scots' invasions of the late 70s?
