I'm just wondering why I keep seeing dog owners constantly snapping a dog's head back with their lead as they're walking along the pavement?

Is it to get the dog to eventually walk to heel, with it's spirit broken, and to give the dog owner a feeling of power/control that is perhaps missing from their everyday life?

Seems a bit cruel to me :(

You're on the right track, if I didn't do it with my head strong (brain dead) Retriever, he'd have me sprinting within 100 yards.

Although my well trainer labrador, is so beaten down into 'his place', he won't even walk through open doors first.

You have to kill it to grill it.

mmmm pass the HP.

Many dogs on a lead, will 'tow' their owner, pulling at the lead as though they were sled dogs on the iditerod race. They regard the constant resistance of the weight of their owner on the other end, as an encouragement - and will do it until they are panting and wheezing furiously. The unwitting human will become frustrated, and not enjoy the walk one bit, and the dog won't actually get much joy from this tug of war either.

The solution is not to keep a constant resistance, but to do quick tugs (not so that the dog becomes unbalanced though) and soft but sternly exacting "no!" when they do it.

Another solution, is to take the animal to a park where it can be released from the lead, then request the dog to 'heel', with occasional rewards for compliance (a pat on the head and telling the animal how good it is for every obedience should also be a reward).

These things take a little time and patience, but are worthwhile in cementing a happy relationship together that works for both parties.

People who dominate their animal with huge airborne wrenches on the lead are showing bad-tempered-human behaviour. However they will not thank anyone to point this out. So a way to get them to realise, might be to commend them on their dog, ask what breed, and suggest that technique as something that really worked with your dog and for a little work made your life so much easier. Tact, Grasshopper!

Was just wondering, so thanks for that

I love my dog and he is part of me. People who do that without reason are foolish, however dogs must be put into their right place and need to learn how to behave. SNAPPING their heads back lol, get real, they are strong characters. They forgive, not hold grudges. So grow up and learn WHY people do it. However its nice to know you consider the dogs feelings, shows you care :)

I have eaten a lot of things in my life, including a poor defenceless guinea pig, more out of idle curiousity than hunger...but there is no way that you would get me to knowingly eat a dog.

A choke chain around their neck (doesn't really choke them if put on the right way , not upside down) tells the dog who is in charge. You are taking the dog out for a walk not the other way round. I found that a dog is more obedient if you praise them when they behave.
