A Minute's Silence? For the POPE???

The Pope had absolutely nothing at all to do with football. He did, however, have a lot to do with opposing women's interests, increasing the third world's starving population and the spread of Aids.

People can - and should - pay their respects to this person privately, without being manipulated by UEFA into some sheep-like public display of fake grief at a football ground, of all places.

They've just had one at Preston. If it happens at Withdean on Saturday, I shall simply not participate.

I was at the Fulham vs Portsmouth game on Sunday in the Pomey end and a load of Pompey fans were shouting and setting there ringtones off during the minutes silence they had (including one Trigger Happy TV impression)

How many silences do we now get in an average season?

Whilst I agree with them for the passing of football legends (Brian Clough), people related to the club (Marie Harding) and global scale natural disasters (Asian Tsunami), do we really need a silence for the passing of anyone in some way famous or important?

The more we have the more devalued they become and we have to stand up at some point before we have a minute's silence each time a new government is elected or whenever the queen leaves Buckingham Palace.

We aren't even a catholic country so what has the pope got to do with our club? Particularly as a great many of our supporters are regularly to be found burning effigies of the pope each year, I don't think it is wholly appropriate we are made to mourn his passing in this way.

That's the point. Once a silence is declared, most people are embarrassed into joining in, and following the herd. Yet many are inwardly seething, wondering why our acceptance and support is being assumed.

Football ground silences are appropriate tributes for those connected with the club, or major football related events.

If people want to commemorate the Pope, they can do it voluntarily, in church or at special public events. Not have it imposed on them, in this totally inappropriate way.

I don't think we should have a minute silence for the Pope as he is not the head of state for the church of England, if people want to pay their respects. Do so privately at church or whatever.

I was raised a Catholic and I think the minute silence is a bloody liberty and totally inappropriate. I would join in a boycott by singing ALBION (if I wasn't moving house that day ).

Prehaps if you posted this for him and explained how people feel he may be able to get the club to abolish the minuites silence on saturday.
