Don't worry, we've still got Steve Redgrave...Oh f***, we haven't!!

Is there such a word as "goldless"? I return goldless, you return goldless, he / she / it returns goldless...

Dont worry, paula radcliffe will win us the gold that will haul us level, or even possibly above, the UAE...

To take the comparison with Australia one stage further. Their football team beat ours last year: nothing significant in that perhaps until you realise that football is only their fifth most popular team sport, behind cricket, Aussie rules and the two rugbies in popularity.

Of course, you could argue that Australians only do well at sport because there's sod-all else to do in the place ... that's what the Aussies I know in London say.

The American government, education system and private companies pump a FORTUNE into sport.

Some ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS in the States would probably be embarrassed with a stadium like Withdean.

Don't know which schools you're talking about, universaties maybe ? Yes the big 'schools' do have great facilities but most students pay a fortune to go to them. High schools do have better facilities but remember they have a lot more land than we do.

I might add that academically the many US schools I've seen are way behind our much maligned education system.

Well, the school system in some states is in a very bad way. I know a fair bit about Oklahoma and their state system is in a really bad way. This is due in no small way to the fact that Oklahoma is one of the few states with no lottery. The reason for this is simple (but pathetic) Oklahomer is Bible belt and Baptists rule down there. As Baptists don't believe in any form of gambling there is no lottery.

It's ironic however that there are many native AMerican reservations there which have casinos !

What's also Ironic is that Oklahoma, not the most populated state has two big universaties which are amongst the best sporting schools in the country.

Yes they do put more cash into sport but at the expense of academics.

Not true, many state universities have fantastic facilities, Ohio State springs to mind immediately. Even Indiana University has a massive (American) football stadium (52,180 seats) and our football team are absolutely horrible. (NB: Our soccer team are NCAA champions though)
It's not true that private universities have the best facilities or that dominate college sports. If anything the reverse is true because the state schools are so much larger than the private ones.
On the cost issue, many atheletes get full scholarships to go to university.
Many US high schools I've seen have (American) football stadiums that put Withdean to shame.

I meant the student fees not admissiion. I remember seeing the huge expanse of Texas Uni in Austin which has a stadium for Gridiron, baseball and Soccer. We would be happy with their soccer stadium and the Gridiron one is huge.

As far as high schools stadia is concerned, whilst I admit they have better facilities than us as I have mainly been in the poorer states the facilities are not that great.
