Why is the UK so poor at sport ?
Because the government sells all our playing fields, schools keep cutting down on the amount of sports kids have to do at school, and the infrastructures are crap(e.g tennis).
or we're all just fat and lazy...

The American government, education system and private companies pump a FORTUNE into sport.

Some ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS in the States would probably be embarrassed with a stadium like Withdean.

There's about a million reasons, but the one's that spring to mind are:

Poor funding at grass roots level for years
Poor investment in school facilities
The wonderful British climate (cross-country running in February anyone?)
Our relatively small population (although I'm sure there are other small nations who do much better than us)

What worries me is that the laziness thing, with kids preferring to play computer games and watch TV rather than play sport, isn't going to kick in for about five to ten years when all the kids who are 9, 10 & 11 would be at an age where they would be competing at a serious level. I think we should probably enjoy our (meagre) success while we still have it!

We're not that bad a sport really are we? Won rugby world cup, semis of the football. As far as the Olympics are concerned we are better at Athletics and stuff I reckon, not things like Judo - hopefully will move up the medals table later :)

Australia do pretty well at sport and their population is nearly a third of ours.

You're right about the laziness though...we'll look on this as a golden age in about 20 years time.

Small population?? Australia are second (?) with a third of the population.

Two main reasons are lack of funding (look at the difference a bit of funding makes to cricket), and our kids aren't brought up to play sport. At school I only played football & a bit of tennis & cricket. Nothing more really

I had no idea their population was THAT small to be honest.

The other thing that concerns me, looking into the future of British sport, is that the "main" sports (particularly football) seem to dominate the media so much, meaning that other sports find it really hard to get the exposure they need. The result of this will be that kids get drawn more and more towards the glamour and money of football and disregard other sports.

Most of the tabloids dedicate 4 to 6 pages to football every day, while cricket/rugby might get a page if England win. The only other sport that really gets a look-in is racing. Maybe we could enter an Olympic gambling team instead.

Look we're ahead of Laos, Guinea-Bissau, the Central African Republic, Bhutan, Kiribati, Mongolia and Sao Tame et Principe (?)- what's the problem?

Did i say semis? Sorry - meant quarters! Still half asleep quite possibly :dunce:

Australia does have a small population - and they have loads of land to play on, we are small, and don't have much space, having said that when there is a field with nothing in it our government doesn't seem to realise it can be used for sport
