Was thinking earlier about our last best team at his level and comparing them against our current squad

90/91

GK

P Digweed - Great shot stopper

Defenders

Colin Pates - Experienced ex Arsenal Centre back.
Paul McCarthy - Young emerging centre back
Steve Gatting - Ex Arsenal long serving full back
John Crumplin - Bognor FC's best export? Football genius!
Gary Chivers - Quality experinced centre back, started carrer with Chelsea
Ian Chapman - Local all action left back

Midfield

Dean Wilkins - great range of passing and dead ball specialist
Clive Walker - Old flash lively down the wing
John Robinson - Young emerging wide player
Robert Codner - Box to box goalscoring midfielder, geat on his day when he could be bothered, passenger when not.
Mark Barham - Signed from Norwich struggled with injuries during his carrer but was capped for England, great winger and lucky we got a full season of him.

Forwards

Garry Nelson - Played out wide and scored goals
Mike Small - Great physical presence to lead the line
John Bryne - Skill & vision

Overs

Wade - 4 goals against the toon
Iovan - Rumanian International
Gurinovich - Russian International
Bissett - Big tall centre back carrer ruined by injury

Well who would win? If Gus was coaching both teams..

I would take Bryne, Small, Barham, Wilkins & Iovan all would improve the current squad. Digweed would have been good back up.

We would have been the only team in history to be promoted with a negative goal difference. I think our current team would of beat them comfortably. Only John Byrne would make the current side, although I would certainly take Small, Nelson, Iovan and that seasons Colin Pates as squad players.

As long as I live and having saw most of the matches that season I will never know how we got to the play off final with that team and even worse how we outplayed Notts County and lost at Wembley
Byrne and Small.......an unlikely yet amazing partnership, second only to Ward and Mellor.

The defence as a unit was to slow

Plus wasn't this the year we took Liverpool to replay after coming back from 2 goals down at Anfield in the FA Cup?

The replay was a cracking game.

Yes, went to extra time at home.

Was great watching Jonny Crumplin up against John Barnes at Anfield, and coming back from 2-0 down was brilliant.

The replay was the last time I went to football with my dad, not a bad one to sign off on!

Me too, we were breathtakingly crap for most of it. Although in the cup matches against Liverpool the team showed that they could play when they wanted to.

Possibly had the most frustrating midfield of any Brighton team ever, you were never sure if Codner, Walker, Wilkins and Barham were going to turn up and destroy the opposition or just phone in an appearance.
