Svens been in the job 5 years today (is it just coincidence it's his biggest supporter's birthday as well?).

I'm not sure we've progressed that far in that time either. Obviously we've qualified for all the major tournaments and had that great win in Germany. The recent defeats to Denmark and Northern Ireland are neither here nor there in the grand scheme of things either really.

But Beckham aside, what I can't see is that he's installed any sense of passion in the team. I suppose he shouldn't have to when it comes down to playing for your country but there must be some onus on him to instill some pride. Scholes is the proof, don't jeopordise United's 50k a week by playing for some outfit called England. If Stuart Pearce was given a role in the England set up he wouldn't let the players think like that.

Even if we go on to do well in Germany I don't think it will be with any flair or passion that we could sustain to become the top team in the world for a while. Sadly I can see a quarter final exit in a dull game which will just paper over the cracks for the next couple of years.

I'm not sure Sven is doing something that an English manager couldn't, for say half the wages! I say sack Sven, get in Curbishley and the money they are saving on his salary they can give to the Albion

Probably thinking about their win bonuses.

Shouldn't get drawn in here, cos I know it'll cost me a days work, but what the hell. My two main beefs with the fella is:

1. He refuses to accept that the Gerrard/Lampard partnership in midfield has never functioned properly, and never will. He is sacrificing the shape of the team to accomodate all his faves. Despite this, the players are still good enough to get the required results most of the time, but it invariably gets exposed once we face quality opposition. Until he accepts that one of those guys has to be dropped in favour of a holding midfielder, we will always have the same problem. (Personally I'd drop Gerrard, and play either King, Carrick or Parker as the holding m/f).

2. He can't react and make effective changes/substitutions during a match when things are going wrong or arn't working. At the highest level, he simply gets out-thought.

England qualified for Germany despite Sven, not because of him. Unless something changes as regards those two points, in my opinion, we will come unstuck in the knockout stages for the same reasons we did in the last two tournaments.

I had such big hopes for how we would progress under his stewardship. Maybe I just expected too much, but I can't see that we have progressed any further than you are entitled to expect with the players at his disposal.

It really wouldn't have taken much tactical nouse to have won two major Championships during his reign already. Unfortunately tactical switches do not seem to be part of what we get for the money.

.

I have been saying that for ages but have been shouted down by other supporters that Gerrard is one of our 'World Class Players'.

He also gets away with murder on the field because of this notion.

Its a tough choice cos you're right, Gerrard IS world class. But I think Lampard has the edge over him because he's that bit more dynamic going forward, and scores goals at a prodigeous rate for a midfielder. The other reason I'd leave Gerrard out rather than Lampard is because Gerrard is another one who likes to spray the 60 yard "hollywood balls" all over the place, and we already have a fella on the right who likes doing that - we don't need two in the team doing it.

As I say, tough choice to leave him out, but THATS what you're paid for Sven, to make tough choices and big decisions.

It does not matter who is the manager because the players are not good enough to win the World Cup.

We have some excellent first team players but......

1. The left side of midfield is still a problem (although Joe Cole has done reasonably well, he does not like passing the ball)

2. While I agree with Easy about Gerrard (does this mean I can wear the uniform tonight by the way), Parker is no Makelele or Vieira. King was found out against Argentina.

3. We lack back up in the strikers. If Rooney is injured/suspended we have no subtlety up front, Owen is an excellent finisher but the alternatives are not worth thinking about.......Crouch, Defoe, Vassell, Beattie, McCammon, Fowler etc are NOT inspiring are they.

4. The centre halves are not as good as people think they are. Crespo, Ronaldinho, Henry etc. will out-think the likes of Terry and Rio easily.

5. Robinson is a good but not great keeper, but if he is injured heaven help us.

Its Beckhams fault Gerrard and Lampard dont play efectively together, if he actually held his position on the right hand side more often i think we would see that.
And then we might got more decent quality crosses coming in.

I take it UB is at FA Headquarters receiving his Birthday gift from Sven.............

Who invented the phrase 'Hollywood ball' and on what basis has Hollywood got within the spirit of passing a football in a gem of soccer?

Dunno but it about spectacle. Style over content. New Star Wars over Old Star Wars. :jester:
