Exactly, because GP recognises that our best chance of scoring away at these big clubs is on the quick counter attack before they can get men behind the ball. Gross slows everything down.

I really want to see Trossard start instead of Gross next week, and before anyone starts throwing the same old Gross stats at me just remember that Trossard now has 2 assists and a goal to his name in less than 30 mins of game time in the last 2 weeks and we’ve looked far more threatening with him, Maupay & Connolly in the team than Gross.

We dont but IMHO he would be a better left sided CB than Burn, who it must be said was good at the start of the season, but has been a liability recently.

All depends how much of the game we have for me. The away games pretty much went on around Gross under Hughton as we had so little of the ball most of the time. If we get as much of the ball as we did at City then Gross would certainly be a good option as his assist stats show. But if we play as we did at Chelsea then he is wasted and almost playing as a specialist who might pick a killer pass on your rare attacks. Davy has shown his range of killer passes when let loose so Gross isn't the only option and certainly isn't undroppable. Potter does seem to tailor his team and style to the opposition more than previous managers so we will sometimes go all out pace which means no Gross and sometimes possession based where he has a massive role. Very interesting to see how it works long term given the amount of teams that have come up with a new style that has taken the PL 10 or so games to figure out - at which point the team in question has dropped like a stone. Having the ability to keep changing will stop this - just needs him to get it right more often than wrong. I think we just need to accept there will be games where he gets it wrong and we will get tonked.

I agree, there is definitely fluidity, however there is a base formation and then the players interchange within it.

Perhaps liability is the wrong word and I should have said weak link. I thought that Burn was poor yesterday.and has been in recent games.

I want Trossard to start, but instead of one of Maupay or Connolly. At times in the first half yesterday they felt a bit same-y, i think Trossard would create a hatful for whichever one of the two were picked, and would get a lot himself

Every team we play (except hapless Spuds) in the last 15 months, overloads our right. Seen it so much at Amex matches. Coaches must believe that our combo of Montoya and a wide midfielder is our achilles heal.

The change to a 4-3-3 does expose our full backs and against certain opposition will cause them to be pinned back. Man United play a 4-5-1 which becomes a 4-3-3 in possession and are clearly vulnerable to some pacey attacks. I'd look to have Trossard in the team but no idea who is best to take out. Alzate seems to fit in to any position he is asked to play and he allows us the ability to change formation mid game but that would mean one of Propper, Stephens or Gross is left out

Re, going 4-3-3. I'm not a fan of the idea, though fair enough as a last 10 minute option. I'd prefer to keep 2 out and out strikers as I think this is really working at keeping opposition defences pinned back.

We've got tough games coming up though and the conventional approach is to play top level opposition with only one striker.

My guess is that if Trossard starts we'll go 4-3-3 as this suits him best and he is probably our best player. If Trossard isn't yet starting it will be 4-2-2-2
