Finally, Brighton have the answer. Could it be the answer for England too?

Rooney up top playing in a role he is now accustomed to. You can then play pretty much any combination of Gerrard, Lampard, Barry, Joe Cole, Lennon, Beckham, Milner, Wright-Phillips, Downing, Carrick, Walcott, Young, Hargreaves etc that you see fit and a flat back four.

No need for Heskey/Crouch unless you need a Plan B. Concentrate on supply from the wings and Lampard and Gerrard getting into the box to support Rooney.

It would play to our strengths. Could it be a good solution? Discuss:

Sounds like a good plan.

The way things are going, it may have to be revised again to something like 2 - 7 - 1 if we really want to play to our strengths!

it works for us as it allows our best elevenplayers to play together, for example it is unfair really to drop any of the midfield trio. i think the answer is pick your best eleven then find a formation that suits.

I think this is a very viable option escpecially against the top sides, but Capello wont do it hes stuck on his big man up front solution.

Im very much a 4-4-2 man but against the top sides its worth a go. Who we are fairing very poorly against at present

Aye, it's got it's pros and cons that's for sure. We tend to get flooded in midfield against the better passing sides and our left side is gonna be so piss poor now in a standard 4-4-2.

:lolol: Please enlighten me on what is wrong in anway with my comment ? Merely stating a fact. In my opinion hes not open to change with regards to formation. I hope he proves me wrong and tries it.
At least we would then know.

I think danny seagull is spot on with his comments.

Nope. 4-5-1 was the shockingly negative formation given a dirty name by McGhee. Dreadful stuff. Besides, how do you fit Forster, Murray and the twelve year old kiddie with the tiny head into that formation?

You highlight the bit for me, he isn't stuck, he is playing the formation that has worked for his entire England tenure. Capello is the best thing to happen to English football in god knows how long.

England and 4-5-1 could work very well Jim but who would you play on the left? Personally Downing and J.Cole arnt playing well enough and Ashley Young should be in the squad. My England team for world cup...

In Rooney we have a striker who is capable of performing this role at the highest level and is something he does often for Man Utd in Europe. He dosent drop deep anywhere near as much as he used to as he now understands this particular role.

This would as has been said enable Lampard and Gerrard a licence to bomb forward that they cant do at present also enabling us to play a natural wide left player other than having Gerrard stuck out there although he does a fine job.

Definately a good option against those top sides that keep the ball better than us.

Id really like to see it tried again now Rooney has the role sussed.

I have to disagree with you about Downing's form. I think he's playing bloody well right now, but I'm not sure that he is international class. I'd go along with you and go with Milner, but Joe Cole could also play there or one of SWP/Lennon.
