I'm gonna see me some of this. Was going to go on Wednesday, but I have to watch England. Next week though, deffo.

AMAZING story. And if you read the history books, the Spartans fought the battle of Thermopylae stark bollock NAKED.

It'd send me running.

They definately fought it with a few other Greeks (7000) though. including 700 Thesians. Who fought with them until the very end.

Going to see the film at the IMAX expecting to see massive Gore. Even if the story is pants to reality. http://www.northstandchat.biz/showthread.php?s=&threadid=99965&highlight=spartans

Well, that was GREAT fun.
Some clunky dialogue, daft bravado, cringingly bad narrative and an utterly gay DELUGE of pectoral muscles and 6-packs. But the battle scenes are enthrallingly shot, actually quite beautiful to watch. Its as shallow as a puddle, but for sheer spectacle and brainless action, its a bloody marvel.

"Dilios, will that scratch hinder you in battle ?"
"No my lord. Twas only an eye. The Gods saw fit to furnish me with a spare."

I haven't seen the movie, but was reading a bit about the ancient battle. How incompetent could the Persians be?

I've read up a bit on the Battle of Thermopylae as well. 300 Spartans and about 5,000 greeks against 200,000 Persians, who couldn't get past the Spartans as they defended a narrow pass no more than two chartiots in width.

It took a betrayal by one of the greeks that led the Persians to a "secret path" around the Thermopylae pass, enabling them to outflank the Spartans and defeat them. But not before the Spartans held up the Persian army in a fearsome battle, enabling the Greeks to get their act together and mount a defence of their realm.

Great story. I love all that mythology shit.

It's intriging stuff, and I'm looking forward to see the movie. It would be interesting to see a Persian account of the battle though, all the sources seem to have a Western bias towards the Greeks!

That's because Xerxes was brought down by Alexandra the Great. It isn't mythology but ancient history.

Thoroughly enjoyed the film..Ok not 'much' of a story but good none the less.
Read "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield if you enjoyed the film.
