I suppose your right Chappers. Hitler under the final solution gassed 6 500 000 jews with 5 000 000 in the last year. Thats 13698 a day, with a lot of children being amoungst them.

I suppose that down side of technology and communication systems is that you can see the event in the comfort of you living room and know exactly what is going on in all its terrible details.

In 1944/45 most Britains and I am sure a lot of Germans did not have the first idea of what was happening under Hitler's regime.

Maybe, just maybe, one place to start might be to stop assuming right now that all of 1.2 billion people share the same point of view? And that they could - if they only wanted to! - all change their mind immediately

I've been to Pakistan, supposedly a hotbed of this extremism. And - hey, what a f***ing great surprise this is eh? - all I saw and heard about there was - people there go about their daily lives: make a few quid, feed their families, shag the missus, go to the cinema, chat with their mates, watch telly, kick a football around...sound a bit like somewhere you know?

In fact, I'd say that the religious penetration of people's daily lives in Pakistan seemed far, far LOWER, - that's LOWER - than it is in your beloved America, Gareth, where all I ever see are religious nutters on the telly and every day, people talking piously about their own dullard faith all the time.

Look MOH I assume you are a Muslim and I am sorry if you take issue with anything I write but you must acknowledge that the Islamic religion needs to put its house in order at the moment.

It may be christians doing these acts in 50 years time who knows but at the moment lets not pretend everything is rosy and huny dory when it is not.

I'm not in the slightest bit religious, I don't actually like religion very much - because it's completely irrelevent - and it often leads to the kind of brainless racist bigotry that people like you so perpetually and brainlessly spout about Muslims. As if they're all the same and all have the same view! Get a grip and a brain while you're at it.

(And let me ask: you were either hypocritical enough to cheer on Amir Khan in the Olympics, despite his being one of THEM - or you would have enjoyed his success a great deal more if he HADN'T been one of THEM? Which was it?)

Read this

150 years of Russian occupation of Chechnya, complete destruction of the country by the Russians in the mid nineties, and no investment by Moscow in reconstruction. Continuing brutal repression of Chechen aspirations by the Russians, with Putin justifying this by persuading us all that the Chechens are nothing but a branch of the "global terror network".

The really terrifying think about last Friday is that the Islamic fundamentalists have shown there are no depths of depravity to which they will sink.

It was bad enough being a traveller wondering if some nutter was on your plane about to plough it into the houses of parliament after it took off but there is at least something you can do about the security of this.

Now the terrorists have decided that children are fair game to be shot in the back 46 time and gangbang raped whats to stop a bunch of Islam men living on state benefits in this country to overtake a christian school and do the same here.

We cannot have a Police gaurd on every school in the land.

The killing children and even raping children both terrorists, and often state-sponsored terrrorists has been going on for ages. It's just now that it's targeting children of the same race, we've decided to sit up and take notice.

I know 99% of Muslim people and Islamic followers are good people but are you really saying that the terrorist attacks are not in the name of Islam and the Jihad. I am confused.

No where in the Koran does it espouse violence. Much like the Holy Bible the Koran teaches the path of peace and love at every step.

But throughout history mankind has used religion or denomination as an excuse for atrocity. Hitler used the Jews as his excuse, the Irish republicans and UK loyalists used Catholicism and Protestantism in Northern Ireland, now pro-Palestinian fundamentalists and Arab extremists are using Islam while the Western world is gripped by its guilt over WWII and allies itself to an Israeli led opposition.

The real puppet masters or drivers here are not religion, but politics and greed. The same politics and greed that drives kings, presidents and prime ministers to wage war, using their own people as their pawns.

I agree with a lot of what Lord B posted about Chechnya … but if mankind is to progress as a species we have to find a way to cut through the iron curtain of politics and find another path.

The Russian people as a whole have suffered the most appalling attrocities at the hands of Napoleon, Hitler and Stalin, to name but a few.

Just a few comments may convince you of the ABSOLUTE AND COMPLETE insanity of one Joseph Stalin (whom Franklin D. Roosevelt referred to as "Good ole Joe"):

He intentionally murdered all the high ranking officers in the military prior to the onslaught of World War 2 so that there would be no one capable of leading a revolution against him!
In the 1930's the Kulaks (well off Russian peasants) were intentionally starved to death in order to implement the concept of the agricultural commune.
He ordered the 1940 murder of Leon Trotsky in Mexico.
A military officer that lost a battle against the Germans in World War 2 was executed.
When the Allied nations returned to the Soviet Union about 100,000 White Cossacks at the end of World War 2 they were executed or put into Gulags at the order of Stalin.
In other words the Russian people have lived with terror and subjugation for more than 400 years and know nothing, absolutely nothing, about democracy or freedom!

It is estimated that Stalin executed more than 20,000,000 Russians!

It just wasn't in the public domain at the time

Part of the problem is the inequality of opportunity in the world, and the corruption/greed/need for power of the people in charge.

Inequlity leads to jealousy. Leaders then use this jealousy to manipulate, either in 'terrorism' or 'oppression'.

Look at the West ; driven to create wealth. Then we're all too greedy to share this wealth.

Chappers is right, the only way to 'cure' this problem is to understand what drives the 'terrorists'.

The Palestinians want their own land, to 'govern' themselves. The Israelis want peace, but their leaders think you've got to adopt a hard-line approach and crush the 'terrorists' rather than engage. The only solution to these type of disputes is via dialogue and concessions.

However, I fear that as other parts of the world develop more, there is only going to be more areas of conflict.:(

It has been estimated that Russian forces have killed around 20,000 Chechen children in the last 9 years; the population of Chechnya prior to the Russian invasion was 2 million - it's now 800,000. I hope, GG, you are prepared to try and understand that.
