16 Teams in the top flight?

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has called for a limit of 16 teams in all top-flight football leagues.

The news was not well received by the Premiership, which contains 20 clubs.

Blatter wants to limit clubs to 45 games a season to prevent player burn-out, and intends to put the plan to a vote of Fifa's executive committee.

If the motion gets the backing of a majority of Fifa's members, Blatter could expel any national association that does not apply the rule.


Is it just me or is Blatter a complete arse?

Blatter should mind his own damn business. The loss of TV revenue would be highly damaging to clubs in a lot of countires, not just here.

Perhaps Premiershite clubs should refrain from playing in meaningless but lucrative pre season tournamants in the States and Japan to avoid burning players out. How clubs can complain about playing too many games when they do this is beyond me.

It's not just the loss of TV revenue but of gate receipts also. And you can bet it would have to filter down the leagues, possibly meaning four less league clubs in total.
Seems to me Blatter has too much power and an irrational dislike of the FA.

Are there not only 3 teams in our premiershite anyway?? The other 17 are playing in quite a close league where anyone can beat anyone.

I really do think that this is a bad idea. No club can benefit from this change. If premiership footballers feel they are working too hard and cannot manage, they should either drop down a division or go to another country to play.

Yes, you have to feel oh so sorry for somebody who is likely to earn more in a week than most do in a year.

Much more of their whining and I might even start egg chasing.

Mind you NFL players only play from August to January and if and only if, they get to the Superbowl they won't play more that 23 games in a season (that includes five pre season games, where most to the starters won't feature much anyway).
