Please,please delete this thread.

When I was 11 a maths teacher asked us to write out 50 fractions,"you know",he said,"!/2,1/4/1/8,and so on".I am still working on this piece of homework.

Of course,any 50 fractions were required,but I continued doubling the numbers and was bald at the age of 11yrs and three days.

Are you sure Yoda? Ithink you've got 3 numbers too many in there.

You have: 9,850,501,549,098,619,803,069,760,023,035,903,451,269,934,817,616,361,666,986,073,351,061,430,442,874,302,652,832,853,566,563,721,228,910,201,656,997,576,704

I've highlighted the numbers that shouldn't be in there.

I've calculated it as:
9,850,501,549,098,619,803,069,760,025,035,903,451,269,934,817,616,361,666,987,073,351,061,430,442,874,302,652,853,566,563,721,228,910,201,656,997,576,704

As a quick check it should have the same number of numbers as the number before unless the 1st number is 5 or more.

So....I reckon the next calculation is

9,850,501,549,098,619,803,069,760,025,035,903,451,269,934,817,616,361,666,987,073,351,061,430,442,874,302,652,853,566,563,721,228,910,201,656,997,576,704

I can assure you that I'm cursing Hiney because I do it with good old fashioned pencil and pen and then check the answer with a little excel macro I wrote:

Sub NumberDoubler()

'declare the variables
Dim Length, Carry, Comma, Counter As Integer
Dim Part, Builder, Number, Number2 As String

Carry = 0 'carry is used when the part of the number, doubled is ten or greater
Comma = 0 'a counter used to put comma after every 3rd number

Range("A2").Replace What:=",", Replacement:="" 'clears out commas from number to be doubled
Range("A2").Replace What:=" ", Replacement:="" 'clears out gaps from number to be doubled

Number = Range("A2").Text 'location of number to be doubled
Number2 = "" 'number2 is the new number to be built up
Length = Len(Number) 'the length of the old number

For Counter = Length To 1 Step -1 'start doubling the number, working backwards

Comma = Comma + 1 'build up the comma counter
Part = Mid(Number, Counter, 1) 'select the number to be doubled
Builder = Right(Part * 2, 1) + Carry 'take the last digit of the number

If Comma Mod 3 = 0 Then 'place commas where applicable and build up the new number
Number2 = "," & Builder & Number2
Else: Number2 = Builder & Number2
End If

If Part * 2 > 9 Then 'add one to next number if current number doubled greater than 10
Carry = 1
Else: Carry = 0
End If

Next Counter

If Carry = 0 Then 'if last carry number is 1 then add append new number
Number2 = "'" & Number2
Else: Number2 = "'" & Carry & Number2
End If

Range("A3").Value = Number2 'output the new number
End Sub

Copy this into excel vba and then plonk the old number into cell A2 of a new workbook. You'll have to prefix the number with a ' so that it thinks it's text rather than a number - Excel can't cope with more than 15 numbered digits displayed.
.
edit - to create the macro, press Alt+F11 and then in project-vba project screen, right hand click 'this workbook' and select insert-module. Then just copy and paste the macro. You can run the macro by going into excel normally and either Alt-F8 or tools-macros

Yes, I am very very sad
