It's a shame the main question of the thread has been lost and not addressed by many

Lots of reasons, being able to speak the language, family ties already in place, from countries with historical links to Britain.
Why do so many British migrants ( sorry, ex pats) go and live in Australia, Canada, America? Much the same reasons, I would have thought,

it costs us thousands to immigrate , we don't just turn up.

Once Sydney is into one of his immigrant rants, it's normally best to ignore him. He'll only get worse till it ends up in the pit

it's your guys problem ......i just don't get the benevolence when the average man in the street is getting rinsed by inept , corrupt , gouging , colluding government and business heavyweights , the Arabs have billions to spend on Football clubs , Golf tournaments , robotic and AI research , architectural feats of mind-blowing scale but when it comes to stepping in and helping a brother out ...?? nah ...not interested in the slightest...!! i'll bow to a man of obvious , superior intellect to educate me as to why that is .....

you may get my drift , i think you do , the whole issue is now weaponised , it's a huge drain on finances but the weapons keep being sent to conflict zones , there are brown envelopes and dark web bank accounts by the hundreds but at the end of the day it's the pleb in the street who pays , thats my angle , i don't have a problem with the migrants as such but the system that creates them is 100% corrupt and ****ing wrong.

The local people don’t decide what’s fair or unfair ! If they want to protest they can go on a March but Not try to stop the police from doing their job. Otherwise England will end up like the States where the police are trigger happy !

you don't get ppe; can ask i you, for what reason do you live here?

I still don't understand why pressure is not put on 'safe countries' like France, Spain & Germany to set up better systems there.

Why are the continually allowed to step aside and let people congregate at the Channel?

Once here, they can't prove Country of Origin so cant be 'sent back'.

I know we have an obligation to assist but I always feel that the EU are taking the p1ss.

The share of assisted returns to countries of origin by countries in the EU for 2020 top 3 were

Hungary (90%)
Luxembourg (66%)
Austria (62%)

But we have left the EU, and it is Johnsonian policy to have nothing to do with their foreign ideas, foreign plans etc. Foreigners should take their lead from our Great British ideas. The immigrants all come from the EU, so it's their fault. They won't take them back so we have to sell them to the Rwandans. Simple

Of course that’s true but I live in hope that we develop a far less confrontational with our former partners until all the wombats that voted leave are no. Longer around and we can then apply to rejoin

No, they cannot necessarily go on a march, thanks to the new “laws”.

Or withdrawing of rights, as it should be called.

many seem to be lazily conflating a matter of immigration enforcement with the problem of border controls. according to the Guardian, chap involved here is a Nigerian overstaying his visa. not a refugee from Syria or Afganistan crossing the channel. people seem to be saying, because we dont accept policy on the latter, its ok to ignore the rest of the law on immigration. i thought rule of law mattered but seems times are changing following the lead by our PM.

on the assement centres they need to go somewhere, Kent is obviously better, i dont see any problem with one in Yorkshire. where else, what is the preferred operation? where do they stay, honestly dont know where refugees get housed, seems to be a bit of blindspot on media and commentry what happens. so im hardly supporting Patel, accepting the need for somewhere to do reception and assessment, while also rejecting the way the border issue is handled.

thats a disappointing revelation.

It is all a bit of a mess, but governments (not just this one) aren't prepared to spend money on it because a contingent of 'voters' don't want money spent on 'immigrants' (asylum seelkers, whatever). A paradox.

All that aside, the latest Patel gambit is simply absurd. It would be more coherent to round them all up and shoot them. Perhaps that's plan B.

Hmmmm....well I hope it isn't true, and that Johnson won't dismiss a policy simply because it emanated in another country.

Make the borough of Southwark a police free zone and allow the residents to provide their own security from now on .

https://socialistworker.co.uk/news/defiant-protesters-block-immigration-raid-in-peckham/

Given that your very own link reports a 'group of people sitting down'....my, that's a bit of an over reaction!

What about the poor ordinary voters of Southwark who were not among the tiny number sitting down?

I presume you'd burn down your neighbour's house if they'd slightly annoyed you. ???
