The overwhelming majority of coffins over 90% I’d say come from the UK, Kent and Somerset to be precise.
So you import them into your business then. in the days your profession had some self respect the undertaker would employ a skilled carpenter to make coffins, a guy who took materials and added value, perhaps a seamstress to dress the coffin with business for the local haberdashers supplying the cloth and the local ironmonger would supply the nails and coffin furniture, an engraver perhaps or at least a painter to write the coffin plate.Perhaps a French Polisher? These people having provided their skills and labour would have created wealth for you when you sold the coffin on for a healthy profit. Their wages would be spent in the local economy ( the only form on "trickle down economics"that actually works)and hopefully you would have appreciated their efforts, and shared the wealth they have amassed for you, rewarded them with decent pay and conditions .

But no, you being a devoted fan of thatcher, Why bother making it if you can import it and still make a profit.

Businessmen like you are the problem not some skilled worker on £30k a year.

Businessmen not prepares to provide opportunity for skilled workers,to your local workforce or community because thatcher says we are not a manufacturing country, we are a low wage service industry country. People like you destroyed our industry not some tv factory worker after a decent wage.People not interested in investing in and training up a skilled workforce.

Just as a matter of interest, your staff. How many of them earn the sort of money you would be prepared to pay for ( if you had one . I know not your personal circumstances) your Daughters wedding?

You forget: the undertaker also had to grow the trees in the first place, cut them down, prepare the wood and grow the cotton bushes and spin the flax. As for the metal for the nails.....

You are right businessmen providing just part of the product are real problem.

Just out of interest, and nothing more, what is your job?

No, the wood would have been provided by a local sawyer or timber merchant, i have covered the benefits to the local community in the hardware shop and haberdashery, the support to other local businesses coming from the trickling down of profits through decent wages or local purchasing.

I am a mechanical engineer with extensive experience in the defence industry by trade.

We’ve got enough South/London/near London awaydays……..the longer ones are a good excuse to do a bit of exploring for me. I’d actually like Luton to go up for Jonesy’s sake, but not otherwise. Forest is the best of the bunch, can combine it with a fishing trip on the Trent :lolol:

Forest for me too. Lots of decent pubs and actually not a bad city in it's own right. Not quite Newcastle but there you go

So you design weapons and you’re spouting about someone who deals with the aftermath of your engineering triumphs?

Making unsavory posts about the jobs of posters on here is taking your trolling too far. In my view you crossed that line a while ago in any case.

Whilst robust, I don’t think his posts are trolling. In fact he makes some interesting points.

I don't design weapons, my speciality is more CQP so it could be argued I save lives, our own troops and police lives. I also dont design, I have a talent for making other peoples stuff work as they intend.

He has joined a BHA messageboard and within a couple of months is making personal comments about an established poster. Perhaps it is a second or tenth account ? Whatever. It’s unsavoury, inappropriate and weird.

As has been established this is my only NSC account. As for the gentleman who got a professional radio worker sacked whilst making a bit of pin money on the side, or perhaps to prop up his ego. Anyone who uses that expression has no right to the moral high ground.

Sorry. LR is quite up to fighting his own battles, but I have to say, this post is of full of utter drivel.

First you casually assume that all his coffins are imported. Then, when put right on that, you pretend you meant ‘imported to the business’? Laughable.

If they are made Kent, because that’s where the company/ skills are then so what? All the trades you refer to are still employed for their skills, just in Sevenoaks or Maidstone, instead of Worthing or Littlehampton. Nobody, can have an issue with that.

I’d imagine the coffin-maker in Kent, has the carpenters and upholsterers all working in house mind, rather than subcontracting every job. Because that would a. Just be stupid, and b. Would make the end result so expensive, that they’d be unviable and all coffins actually WOULD be imported.

That's not been established at all.

If you would kindly check the difference between in-house and imported you will see your fundamental mistake.

You also choose to ignore the potential benefit to the community that in-house production would bring.

Genuinely, I have no idea what response you want here. YOU claimed they were imported, remember? You made an incorrect assumption, and are now making yourself look stupid trying to pretend you meant something different.

You also choose to ignore the potential benefit to the community that in-house production would bring.

His coffins are made in the UK, benefitting the UK economy, and the community where the makers are based. It matters to me not one bit whether that is 80 miles from his base, 10 miles down the road, or in a shed in his back garden.

We have established nothing because importing goods by definition is as I described.

The gentlemen derided the British workforce with a dig about the decline in the UK tv industry, suggesting that demands for higher wages caused it.
Absolute trash but my point about responsible employers maintaining and training a skilled workforce is one you choose to ignore. If an employee adds value to materials and creates wealth they should be rewarded in the way I described. Equally spreading that wealth in the local community improves the quality of life of that employer and employee ( a prosperous Worthing rather than, going back to the original town, a deprived Burnley)

In the good old days society meant something .thatcher killed that, in fact she denied it existed.

Or little thatcherite attitudes thrive and the whole country is poorer for it.

It might interest you and him to know that there are 4 factories in the whole of the world makingvflat screen tv panels. One may even be closed now.
None of that is the fault of the skilled UK worker.
