Nope, not a new striker we're interested in!

But rather a potentially intense and significant spell of windy weather down here in the south and Midlands.

What to expect
There is a good chance that flying debris could result in a danger to life
Damage to buildings and homes is likely, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down
Roads, bridges and railway lines are likely to close, with delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry services and flights
There is a good chance that power cuts, possibly prolonged, could occur and possibly affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
Large waves are likely and beach material is likely to be thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
It is likely there will be falling branches and some uprooted trees

Yep. Could be very interesting across large swathes of Southern England and the Midlands. Disruptive snow is likely on the northern edge too.

Wind gusts of up to 100mph are possible in exposed areas.

At least it should blow any fog away from Falmer on Saturday.

Why do we give our storms such crap names as Dudley and Eunice?

Why not run-of-the-mill names such as Bill, Dave, Chris or Nick? Names of blokes you'd be happy to have a pint with?

The warning is currently Amber, but only because there is some uncertainty over the likelihood. Once we get closer, this will go to a red warning

Or if you want people to avoid taking risks, give them ridiculously aggressive names. Nobody is daring to venture out in the face of Storm Thunderbastard.

The potential is there for the winds to be the strongest since the Burns Day storm back in 1990!
If it continues to develop as suggested, then if you can stay indoors on Friday then do it.

Getting smashed in West Wales , keep looking out the window to spot the return of my recycling bin from the last storm we had about 12 hours ago.

I'm not sure Pol is going to be up for an intellectual discussion.
