Bottom line - as a direct result of the rank incompetence of the officials, we were denied a crucial legitimate equaliser. Our abject profligacy with penalties and other chances is a separate in-house issue to resolve.

But after half an hour today, it SHOULD have been 1-1. And a whole different game. Mason and "Hoops" have a shitload to answer for. A f*cking shitload.

I'd actually feel a lot angrier about the decision if we hadn't missed two penalties and two absolute sitters, in amongst the other chances.

I'm really not replaying this incident because it stopped us getting a different result, although technically you're right, it did, as the goal should clearly have stood.

I think the only reason I'm still here at gone 11pm setting things out like an idiot school boy lawyer is because I'm still in a bit of disbelief at what I saw. I've genuinely never seen anything like it!

I'm not even still here out of any bitterness because of the result. That was our own fault.

I'm just gobsmacked at what I saw, and now very interested to see how the powers that be will wriggle out of it.

I'm with you here 100%. We lost we'll get over that but it's how this decision is going to followed up. We as a club are weak, we're pussies. It needed Potter to come out this evening and say it as it is. The FA daren't challenge it as he would be right, the ref and VAR ref made up new laws on the hoof and for no good reason. A perfectly good goal was scored and that was that. Yet we see a shitstorm of a decision which you could see him getting more and more redder over.

The point here is the two individuals should not be near a football pitch again this season and should undertake training starting with refereeing U6 games.

In a low-scoring game, with 2 low-scoring teams, the cancellation of a legitimate goal has such a massive impact on the game, and in the current context, on the season.

To do it through a mistake on the field is one thing. To then ENDORSE that mistake via numerous replays on VAR is unforgivable incompetence. Unforgivable.

This is the worst VAR decision I think I have ever seen. Two officials, trapped in abject f*cking cluelessness. Mason has already been suspended this month because of 2 STUPID reds he gave as the VAR official that were later overturned. He needs to go. Hooper is a clown. I'd usually give the benefit as its not an easy job. But both of these individuals are an embarrassment to their profession, and should hence be removed from the elite level for the foreseeable future, leaving their clown shoes at the door.

Except for today. They made up a brand new ruling today.

Yes it appears to many on Twitter that quick free kicks were never allowed and the goalkeeper needs asking whether he is feeling ok or needs to go to the toilet.

Wall 10 yards away - tick
Ball stationary in place - tick.
Ref blows whistle - tick.

The problem is Mason will probably be given a game outside of the premier league, why do they do this, this is not the first time he has been wrong, he needs to be sacked, never to officiate a game at any level again. But before this he needs to come out and speak to the media about his decision.
Keep VAR but all official communication regarding decisions must be heard.

Can he be as eloquent and passionate in explaining to a professional footballer how to score from 12 yards?

I'm coming to this thread late, but on the bbc sussex version of the interview his comment about the penalty is that it's not their (the penalty takers') fault they didn't score.

I suspect what's clearly happened (although Mason will never admit it) is that Dunk not taking a run up (or passing the ball) has confused him for a split second and he thought the ball was kicked before the whistle.

Quite bizarrely, he berates Dunk on the retake about needing to wait for the whistle. Well quite clearly he did first time round and Mason blew it.

If Dunk has taken a short run up, Mason wouldn't have blown.

Suddenly coming to his senses he gives the goal. VAR then remind him because of his erroneous whistle, the was "dead" when hit the back of the net.

The authorities will probably come up with some bullshit about Mason erroneously blowing the first whistle too early, but in doing so they have:

1) Removed the "quick free" kick as a perfectly legal tactic in the game, it usually ends in failure.

2) Introduced a new rule mid season of the goalkeeper not being ready.

The only mistake that took place today was Mason blowing the second whistle, but unfortunately I don't expect the vested interests of the "look after our own" authorities to come out with what is clearly obvious.

No.

The only mistake that took place today was allowing Mason to arrive at The Hawthorns dressed in a referees costume, and being allowed take control of a professional football match in the Premier League.

What a crock from the ref.

He’s clearly blown the whistle, realised the keeper is still standing at his far post, panicked and blown again incorrectly.

Everything else is just bullshit made up to try and justify it.

I don’t think there is much more to say than this except for the fact that at first, I was convinced that the ball was still in play when he blew the second whistle, but I then saw another angle on Sky with the ball rippling the net as he blew.

Whatever, if VAR believes play was stopped, a drop ball should have happened next to the goal line.

I do wonder what fate has in store for us in our next fixture in order to stop us from scoring, the bizarreness of this misfortune won’t be topped though.

Standing in the way of control
Anyone who knows anything about emotional intelligence - I, a buffoon, have read half a book on it, because I thought it was vaguely interesting - will know that a man qualified in it is not going to come out and blow his lid.

It's about managing your emotions rather than being swayed like a leaf in the wind over anything that can and will happen in football. There is no good or bad, there just is. That will serve a manager and a club better, long-term, than reactivity.

I think we might have won the Palace play-off if Poyet had known more about it. There again, part of it harps on about expressing yourself adequately, and maybe today was another day when custard face could have done that better. Gross and Welbeck could definitely have done with it. For a set-piece specialist, Gross lost all of his composure, and Welbz was desperate to hit the exact corner of the net.

As for Dunk, the PGMOL might need to show a bit of something approach emotional intelligence. Dermot Gallagher's been on tonight about how Mason will get support and become better for it, as if he's a trauma victim. He said that he lost concentration. Then you end up feeling sorry for him and remembering he's human. But the PGMOL cannot say they treat referees like they're human when no-one in the game is ever allowed to publicly question or criticise them. I don't reckon there was any discussion with Mason when Santo - who is a pretty controlled and highly diplomatic manager - raised legitimate concerns a few weeks ago. Had someone spoken to him, that might have jolted him or got to the bottom of any problems he has. If a player or manager had performed as erratically as he did, it might have been resolved via correction or a break by now. In a few years, hopefully there will be more openness and transparency and this will be seen as quite an antiquated period when referees were unwittingly set up to fail.

town full of eejits
so the players are all set , ref blows whistle to proceed , keeper goes down to tie boot laces , free kick goes in ........does the ref disallow the goal having blown for the kick because the keeper isn't ready...?? dangerous precedent there but not as dangerous as missing 2 ****ing penalties ....:shootself:

The Ref has made a massive ricket and they have used VAR to get him out of jail - utter farce.

But all this is just papering over the cracks. None of our players are capable of hitting the target from 12 yards (or Connolly from 6 yards). The ref is league 1 as is our strike force.

So to summarise we didnt deserve to win because of our powder puff efforts on goal but we were denied a point because we were not awarded a goal that was a legitimate goal. No wonder everyone is angry, even i am. It is a seperate issue we are in our position because we cannot score goals, even from penalties. We should have drawn that match and not lost and it is because of a mistake the bungling officials are trying to justify as a correct decision we are closer to the relegation trap door today.

It wasn’t on Sky’s replay.

How do you want potter to argue with VAR ? Drive down to Stockley park ? Your frustration is misguided

The issue is why did Lee Mason blow his whistle a second time. He is entitled to, but it’s extremely risky for a referee to do what he did, for that very reason

It would make a great story if Potter drove up to Stockley park though
