I think the Captains armband is largely symbolic this day and age. Most teams have multiple players with leadership qualities.

I'm surprised we haven't gone the Italian route, where the player with the most caps gets the armband - At International level anyway.

When I saw the thread title, I immediately thought that and posted it.


Zero interest in the subject matter I’m afraid. Other than the huge honour of captaining your country, football captaincy is imho no big deal. Unlike rugby union and cricket where the captain makes key decisions throughout each match.
